Samson

Samson vs. Jesus
Samson was a judge of Israel, who performed herculean feats of strength against the Philistine oppressors until he was betrayed to them by his mistress Delilah (Judges 13–16)

Samson was a type of Christ in that he was the mightiest of all the judges. He defeated more of God’s enemies in his death than he did in his life. This is also the case with the Lord Jesus.

By his sacrificial death the Lord Jesus destroyed the enemies of God and His church.

Jonathan Edwards drew out this typological parallel when he wrote: “the true Samson does more towards the destruction of his enemies at his death, than in his life, in yielding up himself to death, he pulls down the temple of Dagon, and destroys many thousands of his enemies, even while they are making themselves sport in his sufferings; and so he whose type was the ark, pulls down Dagon, and breaks off his head and hands in his own temple, even while he is brought in there as Dagon’s captive.1

SAMSON
Hebrew translation of Samson’s name is “solar/”like the sun.

Samson spread out his arms and sacrificed his life for Israel.

An angel of the Lord foretold Samson’s birth to his mother. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren and bearest not; have not borne children but thou shalt conceive and bear a son (Judges 13:3).

JESUS
The only begotten Son of God, the Savior of Mankind, God incarnate.

Hebrew translation of the name of Jesus is “Salvation” “whose help (salvation) is Jehovah”.

Jesus spread out his arms on the cross and sacrificed his life so sinners (like me and you) can live.

An angel of the Lord foretold the birth of Jesus to his mother. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS (Luke 1:30-31).

SAMSON

Samson was put on public display and mocked.

”The Spirit of the Lord was upon Samson; his life portrayed supernatural strength that defied explanation.

Betrayed by loved one (Philistine wife to be and Delila).

Samson spoke a riddle that none understood; he explained to those closest to him….Philistine wife to be and Delila.

His captors made a sport of him and mocked him

JESUS

Jesus was put on public display and mocked.

The Spirit of the Lord was upon Him….rested upon Him and stayed & He performed miracles.

Betrayed by loved one (Judas Iscariot) for 30 pieces of silver.

Jesus spoke in parables that few understood; he explained to those closest…his disciples.

His accusers and guard made games of punishing Him and made a sport of His sufferings;

SAMSON
His sacrificial death defeated more of God’s enemies in his death than he did in his life.

Miraculous conception and birth….Samson’s mother….while previously barren and bare not…bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew and the LORD blessed him (Judges 13:24).

JESUS
By His sacrificial death the Lord Jesus destroyed Satan and the enemies of God and His church.

Miraculous conception and birth….born of a virgin….Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 1:18)…Behold a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us (Matthew 1:23).

SAMSON
The angel of the Lord foretold the purpose of Samson’s life… for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines (Judges 13:5). Samson was one of the last judges appointed by God over the Israelites in the Old Testament. God used the life of Samson as part of the plan to deliver the captive Israelites from oppression of the enemy. Before birth, Samson’s life was set apart…consecrated… for the work and Glory of God.

Mother walked by faith and believed the birth would happen despite impossible circumstances.

JESUS
The angel of the Lord foretold the purpose of the life of Jesus…for he shall save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). Jesus is our personal Savior….through His sinless life, death on the cross and resurrection from death, we can be set free from sin and death…reconciled back to God to live…ETERNALLY. We come to salvation through repentance of sins and being born again through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Jesus is also the Ultimate Judge….are you ready for his second coming?

Mother walked by faith and believed the birth would happen.

6. Samson (Judges 13-19)

Samson was the worst judge of Israel. He was a drunkard, a sexually immoral, and lived for worldly pleasures. Nevertheless, he made it to the Hebrews hall of faith, and his life surprisingly parallels Jesus’s.

An angel announced both his birth and Jesus’s. The angel of the Lord came to Manoah and his wife and told them they would conceive (Judges 13:3). Angel Gabriel told Mary she would give birth (Luke 1:30-31).

Both their births were miraculous as Samson’s mother was barren, and Mary was a virgin. The angel also announced that both Samson and Jesus would be set apart for ministry (Judges 13:2-3, Luke 1:26-27), and both would become a savior of their people (Judges 13:5, Matthew 1:21).

Samson acted in the power of the Holy Spirit (Judges 14:6;19). The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus during His baptism (Matthew 3:16).

Both were handed over to the Israelites (Judges 15:9-13, Matthew 27:1-2), and were both betrayed by someone closed to them. Samson was betrayed by Delilah, his lover (Judges 16:18-21), while Jesus was betrayed by Judas, his disciple (Matthew 26:47-50).

Both Samson and Jesus died to destroy their enemies, the philistines, and sin, respectively. And they both achieved more in their death than they ever did alive (Judges 16:30, John 12:31-32; Hebrews 2:14, 1 John 3:8).

Samson foreshadows Jesus through parallels like angelic announcements of their births, miraculous strength, unique divine calling, and sacrificial deaths to defeat enemies, though Samson was flawed and self-serving while Jesus was perfect and selfless; both were betrayed, humiliated (Samson blinded, Jesus mocked), and in their final acts, brought down the enemy’s power, with Samson’s death bringing temporary relief and Jesus’s death bringing eternal victory over sin and death, making Samson an imperfect, earthly type of the ultimate Messiah.

Miraculous Birth & Calling

Angelic Announcement: An angel announced Samson’s birth to his barren mother (Judges 13:3-5), just as Gabriel announced Jesus’s birth to Mary.
Nazirite Vow: Both were set apart from birth for a divine purpose and mission to deliver God’s people, though Samson’s Nazirite vow involved specific restrictions (no razor, wine).
Skipped Childhood: Both stories jump from birth to adulthood, highlighting their unique roles.

Ministry & Rejection

Divine Strength: Both possessed supernatural strength from God, though Samson misused his.
Encountering Enemies: Samson went into enemy (Philistine) territory, similar to Jesus ministering to Gentiles and Israel rejecting Him.
Betrayal: Both were betrayed by a close associate for silver (Delilah for Samson, Judas for Jesus).

Humiliation & Sacrifice

Torture & Mockery: Both faced public humiliation and torture by their enemies (Samson blinded, Jesus mocked with a crown of thorns).
Final Act: In his death, Samson prayed for strength to pull down the temple pillars, killing himself and many enemies; Jesus’s prayer on the cross (a greater sacrifice) brought eternal salvation, defeating Satan.

Key Differences (Samson vs. Jesus)

Motive: Samson acted selfishly for personal vengeance; Jesus acted out of selfless love for humanity.
Outcome: Samson’s victory was temporary and tied to his life; Jesus’s death led to resurrection and eternal triumph over sin and death.
Nature: Samson was a flawed, human judge; Jesus was the perfect Son of God.
