Jehova's Witness ( Religious Organization )

On this page we will discuss some of the differences between being a born again Christian and what the Jehova’s Witness religious organization teaches about salvation

We encourage anyone involved to do their research on all sides of these issues.  It’s a matter of eternity.

We know that you can not earn your salvation.  The only way is through Jesus, by forsaking your religious works, confessing Jesus as Lord, and believing that His work on the cross will suffice.  He made the promise of eternal life.  He died for your sins and He rose from the dead ‘bodily’ as in the gospels, and belonging to the Jehova’s Witness Religious Organization will not help you achieve what He has done for you.

[Rom 10:9 KJV] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
[Rom 10:10 KJV] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

[Eph 2:8 KJV] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
[Eph 2:9 KJV] Not of works, lest any man should boast.

While the Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus lived and died, they do not believe everything that he claims about himself, nor do they believe that he is God, but was created by God.

To them, Jeuss is very important to God but not in essence God. They believe that he is in fact the Archangel Michael who became a man.

And while they believed he died and paid a ransom for the sins of humanity, they do not believe that he rose again bodily, but spiritually, and materialised again in a new body in order to appear before his disciples.

Both these claims are counter to the central claims of Christianity and, if in fact they are true, would mean that Christianity is false and that people perhaps would need to convert to their organization that was formed in the 1870’s.

Yes, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe Jesus was resurrected, but they teach it was a spiritual resurrection, not a physical one, meaning he was raised as a powerful spirit creature, not in a flesh-and-bone body. They believe God destroyed his human body and raised him as a spirit to rule as King of God’s heavenly Kingdom, with the ability to appear in materialized human form, but emphasize the resurrection was spiritual to allow for his permanent ransom sacrifice.

Key Beliefs on Jesus’ Resurrection:

Spiritual, Not Physical: They hold that Jesus’ resurrection was as a spirit being, a change from his human form to a glorified spirit.

Sacrifice of the Body: They believe Jesus’ physical body was permanently sacrificed for mankind’s sins, so he couldn’t have been raised in it.

Materializations: Jesus appeared to his disciples in various human-like forms (materializations) after his resurrection, which they see as evidence he wasn’t in his original body.

Focus on Death: They observe the memorial of his death (the Lord’s Supper) rather than Easter, focusing on his sacrifice as commanded by Jesus.

Jesus is Subordinate: They believe Jesus is God’s Son and subordinate to God (Jehovah), not Almighty God himself.

Contrast with Traditional Christianity:

Mainstream Christianity teaches a physical resurrection, where Jesus rose with the same flesh-and-bone body, appearing to his disciples and proving it by eating and being touched. Jehovah’s Witnesses interpret the biblical accounts differently, emphasizing the spiritual nature of the resurrection to align with their understanding of Jesus’ role as a spiritual King.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses movement originated from a Bible study group started by Charles Taze Russell in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the 1870s. The group adopted the official name “Jehovah’s Witnesses” in 1931.

Key Dates in the Founding

1870: Charles Taze Russell organized an independent Bible study group, originally known as the “Millennial Dawn Bible Study” or “Bible Students”.

1879: Russell began publishing the magazine Zion’s Watch Tower and Herald of Christ’s Presence, which later became known simply as The Watchtower and served as the primary means to spread their evolving doctrines.

1884: The movement was legally incorporated as the Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society (later renamed the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania).

1931: During a convention in Columbus, Ohio, the group led by Joseph Franklin Rutherford, Russell’s successor, adopted the distinctive name “Jehovah’s Witnesses,” based on the scripture at Isaiah 43:10. This name change helped distinguish Russell’s original followers who remained with the organization from other independent “Bible Student” groups that had splintered off after his death.

10 Key Differences Listed :

JEHOVA’S WITNESS do not accept that JESUS is God.

They also say you must be an JEHOVAH’S WITNESS or at a minimum now do WORK to go to heaven….instead of just believe in the completed work of the bodily risen JESUS and call upon JESUS Himself alone to save you.

From their site, Jehovah’s Witnesses generally believe that salvation requires faith in God, and obedience to His rules.

According to their article on their site :

According to their site :

In a similar way, salvation belongs to those who cooperate with mankind’s Rescuer, Jehovah God. Salvation is a gift from God, yet not all people will attain it. God’s Son, Jesus, said: “Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will.”—Matthew 7:21.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that God saves only those who exercise faith in the ransom sacrifice of Jesus and closely follow Jesus’ teachings. (Acts 4:10-12) Consider three important requirements for salvation that are revealed in God’s Word.

(1) “By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves,” Jesus told his companions. (John 13:35) Jesus’ own example of giving his life in behalf of others stressed the importance of love. Those who love others are demonstrating a quality vital for salvation.

(2) “I have made your name known to them,” said Jesus in prayer to his Father. (John 17:26) Jesus knew how important God’s personal name, Jehovah, was to his Father. Jesus prayed for his Father’s name to “be sanctified.” (Matthew 6:9) Sanctifying God’s name includes knowing that name and treating it as important and holy. Like Jesus, those seeking salvation need to use God’s name. They also need to teach others about God’s name and qualities. (Matthew 28:19, 20) In fact, only those calling on God’s name will be saved.—Romans 10:13.

(3) “My kingdom is no part of this world,” Jesus said to Pontius Pilate. (John 18:36) Few today demonstrate faith in God’s Kingdom, or government, of which Jesus is King. Instead, they place their trust in human institutions. By contrast, those who will be saved loyally support God’s Kingdom and teach others about how it will liberate all faithful mankind.—Matthew 4:17.

After learning some of the requirements for salvation, Jesus’ disciples said: “Who possibly can be saved?” Jesus answered: “The things impossible with men are possible with God.” (Luke 18:18-30) Jehovah’s Witnesses diligently try to meet these requirements for salvation. They also work hard to help others to be saved.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus was resurrected spiritually from the dead, but not physically.

Biblically, however, the resurrected Jesus asserted that he was not merely a spirit but had a flesh-and-bone body.

[Luke 24:39 KJV]  “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.”

And while they believe that he died and paid a ransom for the sins of humanity, they do not believe that he rose again bodily but spiritually and materialised a new body in order to appear before his disciples.

He ate food on several occasions, thereby proving that he had a genuine physical body after the resurrection.

[Luke 24:41 KJV] And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
[Luke 24:42 KJV] And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
[Luke 24:43 KJV] And he took [it], and did eat before them.

This was confirmed by his followers who physically touched him.

[Matt 28:9 KJV] And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have a long history of issuing false prophecies and then lying to cover them up. Here is how to use quotations from the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ own publications to educate them about their false prophecies.

ARTICLE : HERE :

https://www.billionbibles.com/jehovahs-witnesses/jehovahs-witnesses-false-prophecies.html

Jehovah’s Witnesses are a false prophet according to Deuteronomy 18:20-22, which defines a false prophet as anyone who makes a prediction in the name of God, and that prediction does not materialize.

Jehovah’s Witnesses falsely predicted Armageddon and other events multiple times in the past.

Some of the most prominent failed prophecies are:

1. 1914 “final end of the kingdoms of this world” **
2. 1925 “Resurrection of the patriarchs“
3. 1975 “Stay alive ’till ’75”
4. 2000’s “this generation will by no means pass away…“

** Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the second coming was an invisible, spiritual event that occurred in the year 1914. The NWT gives the translation “presence” instead of “coming” for the Greek word parousia because Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Christ has already returned.

Biblically, however, the yet-future second coming will be physical, visible.

[Acts 1:11 KJV] Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Every eye will see him.

[Rev 1:7 KJV] Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they [also] which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
[Rev 1:8 KJV] I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Critics of Jehovah’s Witnesses point to a history of the religion’s publishing body, the Watch Tower Society, issuing numerous unfulfilled predictions regarding the end of the world, Christ’s return, and other significant events. The organization itself acknowledges that it has made mistakes in its interpretations but denies being a “false prophet” in the biblical sense, attributing the errors to human fallibility and an eagerness for God’s Kingdom.

Key Unfulfilled Predictions

The Watch Tower Society made a number of date-specific predictions over its history:

1874: The founder, Charles Taze Russell, taught that Jesus returned invisibly in October 1874. This was later changed to 1914.
1914: Russell predicted the end of the “Gentile Times” and the complete overthrow of all world governments, leading to Armageddon. When this did not occur visibly, the doctrine was reinterpreted to mean Jesus began ruling invisibly from heaven that year. This remains a central belief.
1918: Predicted the destruction of “Christendom” (other Christian churches) by God. This also did not happen.
1925: Under the second president, Joseph Rutherford, it was predicted that Old Testament figures like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob would be resurrected to Earth. A mansion called “Beth-Sarim” was even built in San Diego for their return, but they never appeared, and the property was sold in 1948.
1975: A major campaign suggested that the 6,000 years of human history since Adam’s creation would end in the autumn of 1975, and that Christ’s millennial reign might begin. Many members sold homes and quit jobs to prepare, leading to a large exodus of members when the prediction failed.

Response to Criticism

When confronted with these unfulfilled expectations, the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ organization has offered several explanations:

Not inspired: They state that they are not inspired prophets and that their publications are not infallible.
Progressive revelation (“new light”): They cite Proverbs 4:18 to explain that understanding of Bible prophecy is progressive, getting “lighter and lighter” over time, requiring adjustments in their views.
Overeagerness: They have suggested that some unfulfilled expectations resulted from an overeagerness for the new system of things or that members were “overly enthusiastic”.

Critics, however, argue that these responses are contradictory to past claims of receiving direction from God or angels, and maintain that the pattern of failed predictions meets the biblical definition of a false prophet in Deuteronomy 18:20-22.

We have reviewed this Ai response and it appears in line with our understanding, which is limited to the study we have done over the years and we are not experts.  We are learning still as well always.

NOTE: We are not making excuses for sin.  We agree those who are truly saved will perform in newness out of love, not for salvation, but because we love God and His ways are now our ways with His Spirit guiding us and correcting us.

With JW’s they are still trying to work out being saved : According to their article on their site :

https://www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/questions/once-saved-always-saved/

Does the Bible Teach ‘Once Saved, Always Saved’?

No, it does not teach the doctrine of ‘once saved, always saved.’ A person who has gained salvation by faith in Jesus Christ can lose that faith and the salvation that comes with it. The Bible says that maintaining faith requires great effort, a “hard fight.” (Jude 3, 5) Early Christians who had already accepted Christ were told: “Keep working out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”—Philippians 2:12.

Bible verses that disprove the teaching of ‘once saved, always saved’
The Bible warns against serious sins that will keep a person from entering God’s Kingdom. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Galatians 5:19-21) If salvation could not be lost, such warnings would be meaningless. Instead, the Bible shows that someone who has been saved can fall away by returning to a practice of serious sin. For example, Hebrews 10:26 states: “If we practice sin willfully after having received the accurate knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins left.”—Hebrews 6:4-6; 2 Peter 2:20-22.

Jesus emphasized the importance of maintaining faith by giving an illustration in which he likened himself to a vine and his followers to branches on that vine. Some of them would at one time demonstrate faith in him by their fruits, or actions, yet would later fail to do so and be “thrown out like a [fruitless] branch,” losing their salvation. (John 15:1-6) The apostle Paul used a similar illustration, saying that Christians who do not maintain their faith “will be lopped off.”—Romans 11:17-22.

Christians are commanded to “keep on the watch.” (Matthew 24:42; 25:13) Those who fall asleep spiritually, whether by practicing “works belonging to darkness” or by not fully performing the works that Jesus commanded, lose their salvation.—Romans 13:11-13; Revelation 3:1-3.

Many scriptures show that those who have been saved must still endure faithfully to the end. (Matthew 24:13; Hebrews 10:36; 12:2, 3; Revelation 2:10) First-century Christians expressed joy when they learned that fellow believers were enduring in their faith. (1 Thessalonians 1:2, 3; 3 John 3, 4) Does it seem reasonable that the Bible would stress faithful endurance if those who did not endure would be saved anyway?

Only when his death was imminent did the apostle Paul feel that his salvation was assured. (2 Timothy 4:6-8) Earlier in his life, he recognized that he could still miss out on salvation if he gave in to fleshly desires. He wrote: “I pummel my body and lead it as a slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself should not become disapproved somehow.”—1 Corinthians 9:27; Philippians 3:12-14.

Biblically, however, Jesus said that we must be born again.

[John 3:7 KJV] Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

That we are sealed unto the day of redemption.

[Eph 4:30 KJV] And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

We were saved without works, but unto good works, but that Jesus will lose none.

[Eph 2:8 KJV] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
[Eph 2:9 KJV] Not of works, lest any man should boast.

If we are born again, we have eternal life.

[1 John 5:11 KJV] And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

We used Google to ask the following :Date: 01-13-2026 – query: ‘do jehovah’s witnesses believe hell?’
‘
Below we display the search results including ( if applicable ) our mark-ups in  ‘green italics‘

AI Results :

No, Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in a fiery, eternal hell of torment; they interpret biblical “hell” (Sheol/Hades) as the common grave of mankind, a state of unconscious non-existence, and view fiery punishment (Gehenna/Lake of Fire) as everlasting destruction or annihilation, not conscious suffering, believing a loving God wouldn’t inflict eternal torment.

Their View on “Hell”

Sheol/Hades: These Hebrew and Greek words, often translated as “hell,” refer to the common grave where all the dead go, a place of inactivity and no consciousness (like “soul sleep”).
Gehenna/Lake of Fire: This symbolizes complete, permanent destruction (annihilation) for the persistently wicked, a final death from which there’s no resurrection, not a place of eternal torture.

Why They Don’t Believe in Eternal Torment

God is Love: They believe eternal torment contradicts God’s loving nature (1 John 4:8).
The Soul Dies: They hold that humans don’t have an immortal soul; the person ceases to exist when they die, so conscious torment is impossible.
Biblical Basis: They point to scriptures like Genesis 3:19 (“Dust you are and to dust you will return”) and Romans 6:23 (“The wages sin pays is death”) as evidence that the penalty for sin is death, not eternal suffering.

In essence, for Jehovah’s Witnesses, “hell” is either the silent grave or permanent destruction, not a place for unending torture.

We have reviewed this Ai response and it appears in line with our understanding, which is limited to the study we have done over the years and we are not experts.  We are learning still as well always.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe hell is not a place of eternal suffering but is rather the common grave of humankind. The wicked are annihilated—snuffed out of conscious existence forever.

Hell vs. sheol, hades, etc. :

The New World Translation does not translate the words sheol, hades, gehenna, and tartarus as “hell” because Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in hell.

Biblically, however, hell is a real place of conscious, eternal suffering.

[Matt 5:22 KJV] But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

[Luke 12:5 KJV] But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

[Matt 25:41 KJV] Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
[Matt 25:46 KJV] And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

[Rev 14:9 KJV] And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive [his] mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
[Rev 14:10 KJV] The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
[Rev 14:11 KJV] And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

[Rev 20:12 KJV] And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
[Rev 20:13 KJV] And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
[Rev 20:14 KJV] And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
[Rev 20:15 KJV] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Like Christians, JWs believe that reconciliation with God comes through Jesus, but unlike Christians, they believe that the Holy Spirit is a power or active force of God within the world. The Holy Spirit is less a person and more a kind of power.

We used Google to ask the following :Date: 01-13-2026 – query: ‘Do jehovah’s witnesses believe in the trinity?’
‘
Below we display the search results including ( if applicable ) our mark-ups in  ‘green italics‘

AI Results :

No, Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in the Trinity; they reject the traditional Christian doctrine, viewing God as a single being, Jesus as God’s first creation (not co-equal), and the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force, not a person of the Godhead. They hold that the Father alone is the Almighty God, and Jesus is his distinct Son, emphasizing the separation between them, unlike the co-equal, co-eternal three persons of the Trinity.

Key Differences in Beliefs

God’s Nature: Jehovah’s Witnesses believe there is one God, Jehovah, and he is a singular entity, not three persons.
Jesus Christ: They believe Jesus is God’s Son, his first creation, and more than a mere man, but not God himself, viewing him as subordinate to the Father.
Holy Spirit: They see the Holy Spirit as God’s active, impersonal power, not a divine person like the Father or Son.

In Summary

While they honor Jesus as Savior and God’s Son, Jehovah’s Witnesses fundamentally differ from mainstream Christianity by rejecting the Trinity, seeing it as unscriptural and believing it contradicts the Bible’s portrayal of God as one.

We have reviewed this Ai response and it appears in line with our understanding, which is limited to the study we have done over the years and we are not experts.  We are learning still as well always.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe Jesus was crucified on a stake, not a cross. Moreover, they believe that the cross is a pagan symbol that Christians have adopted because of the influence of satanic forces.

First let’s remember and pray they consider this :

[1 Corinthians 1:18 KJV]
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”
[1 Corinthians 1:23 KJV]
“But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;”
[1 Corinthians 1:24 KJV]
“But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.”
[1 Corinthians 1:25 KJV]
“Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

There are a number of problems with the view that Jesus died on a stake.

Below are a few articles and points for the next time a Jehovah’s Witness tells you Jesus died on a stake, not a cross.

Points :

First, the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, which claims to be God’s prophet on earth today, used to teach that Jesus died on a cross. In fact, up until October 1, 1931, The Watch Tower magazine (now called The Watchtower) included a cross and crown on the cover. This was part of their official logo for 40 years.

Moreover, in 1921, The Watch Tower published a book by Joseph Rutherford—the second president of The Watch Tower—titled The Harp of God. Repeatedly, Rutherford affirms that Jesus died on a cross. For example, he writes, “The ransom price was provided at the cross. The cross of Christ is the great pivotal truth of the divine arrangement, from which radiates the hopes of men” (141, emphasis added).

It is imperative that you point this out to your Jehovah’s Witness friends. This is not meant to humiliate them. Many have no idea how The Watchtower has changed this doctrine—and others—over time.

Here’s the crucial question you need to ask: If The Watchtower is a true prophet of God—who speaks for Jehovah—how could they get this wrong?

If they are willing to admit that The Watchtower was wrong, then ask if they could be wrong about other doctrines, like the deity of Christ.

Minimally, this should cause them to doubt their alleged prophet.

We used Google to ask the following :Date: 01-13-2026 – query: ‘Do jehovah witnesses believe Cross vs. Torture Stake?’
‘
Below we display the search results including ( if applicable ) our mark-ups in  ‘green italics‘

AI Results :

Yes, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus was executed on a single, upright torture stake (or pole) with his hands nailed together above his head, rather than on the traditional two-beamed cross.
Reasons for their belief

Linguistic Interpretation: The New World Translation (NWT) of the Bible, used by Jehovah’s Witnesses, translates the original Greek word stauros as “torture stake” or “stake” instead of “cross”. They contend that in classical Greek, stauros primarily referred to a single upright post or pole, and there is no biblical evidence for a crossbeam. The Bible also refers to the execution instrument as a “tree” (xylon in Greek), supporting the single stake view.

Avoidance of Idolatry: A primary reason for rejecting the cross is the belief that using images or symbols in worship constitutes idolatry, which the Bible forbids. They see the cross as having pagan origins, adopted by other Christian religions after the first century.

Identifying Mark of Christians: Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that self-sacrificing love, as described in John 13:34, 35, is the true identifying mark of Jesus’ followers, not the use of any physical symbol like a cross or stake.

Focus on the Sacrifice: The important thing to them is that Jesus died for sins, not the specific shape of the instrument of execution. The debate over the shape of the instrument is a matter of historical accuracy for them, not a point of worship.

The Difference in Depiction

In their publications, Jehovah’s Witnesses depict Jesus’ execution on a single upright post. This contrasts with traditional Christian depictions of Jesus on a cross with his arms outstretched. Mainstream Christian scholars often point to the New Testament’s mention of “nails” (plural) used in his hands (John 20:25) and the inscription placed “above his head” (Matthew 27:37) as evidence for a cross shape with outstretched arms. We have reviewed this Ai response and it appears in line with our understanding, which is limited to the study we have done over the years and we are not experts.  We are learning still as well always.

Who was Charles Taze Russell?

https://www.gotquestions.org/Charles-Taze-Russell.html

Who was Joseph Franklin Rutherford?

https://www.gotquestions.org/Joseph-Franklin-Rutherford.html

FROM GOOGLE :

charles taze russell false prophecy

Charles Taze Russell, founder of the Bible Students movement (precursor to Jehovah’s Witnesses), made several prophetic claims, most notably predicting the end of Gentile times in 1914, which didn’t bring the predicted societal collapse but marked a spiritual shift for his followers, while earlier dates like 1874 (Christ’s invisible presence) and 1881 (harvest conclusion) also saw adjustments, leading critics to label these as false prophecies, though supporters viewed them as evolving understandings of biblical timelines.
Key Predictions & Events:
1874: Russell believed Christ’s invisible presence (Parousia) began, starting a spiritual harvest.
1878: He saw this as the end of the “Gentile Times,” marking nominal churches’ disfavor.
1914: Predicted the final end of Gentile rule and the establishment of God’s kingdom, a significant year that didn’t bring worldwide apocalypse as expected but was viewed as a pivotal spiritual event by Russell’s followers.

Adjustments: When dates passed without full fulfillment, Russell reinterpreted them, extending timelines or finding new biblical interpretations, such as extending the harvest to 1881.
Why They’re Called “False Prophecies”:
Critics point to the failure of specific dates (like 1914 to bring the end of the world) to fully materialize as literal, world-ending events.

Supporters’ View:

Supporters see these as earnest interpretations of scripture that evolved, with 1914 being a spiritual turning point, not a literal end-of-world date as commonly perceived.
In essence, Russell’s prophetic timeline focused heavily on specific dates for spiritual events, leading to criticism when world events didn’t align perfectly, but these predictions formed the foundational timeline for the Bible Students movement.

FROM GOOGLE :

Joseph Franklin Rutherford false prophecy

Joseph Franklin Rutherford, the second president of the Watch Tower Society (now known as Jehovah’s Witnesses), is widely associated with the failed prophecy that the biblical patriarchs would be resurrected in 1925. This prediction was a central theme of his campaign and book, Millions Now Living Will Never Die.

Details of the Prophecy
The Claim: In his 1920 book Millions Now Living Will Never Die, Rutherford asserted that the end of the current system would occur in 1925, and at that time, faithful men of old, such as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, would be resurrected to rule as “princes” on Earth.

The Preparation: In anticipation of their physical return, a luxurious Spanish-style mansion named Beth Sarim (meaning “House of the Princes”) was built in San Diego, California, in 1929.

The Failure: The year 1925 came and went without the predicted resurrection or the end of the world. After the prophecy failed, Rutherford reportedly admitted his error, calling it “merely an expressed opinion,” though he continued to use Beth Sarim as his own residence during the Great Depression until his death in 1942. The building was eventually sold in 1948, and the associated doctrine was dropped in 1950.

Rutherford and the Watch Tower Society’s other date-specific predictions have led critics to label him a false prophet, often referencing the biblical criteria found in Deuteronomy 18:21-22 for identifying one.

The New World Translation (NWT) is defined by the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ parent organization (the Watchtower Society) as “a translation of the Holy Scriptures made directly from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek into modern-day English by a committee of anointed witnesses of Jehovah.” The NWT is the anonymous work of the “New World Bible Translation Committee.” Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that the anonymity is in place so that the credit for the work will go to God. Of course, this has the added benefit of keeping the translators from any accountability for their errors and prevents real scholars from checking their academic credentials.

The New World Translation is unique in one thing – it is the first intentional, systematic effort at producing a complete version of the Bible that is edited and revised for the specific purpose of agreeing with a group’s doctrine.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Watchtower Society realized that their beliefs contradicted Scripture. So, rather than conforming their beliefs to Scripture, they altered Scripture to agree with their beliefs. The “New World Bible Translation Committee” went through the Bible and changed any Scripture that did not agree with Jehovah’s Witness theology. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that, as new editions of the New World Translation were published, additional changes were made to the biblical text.

As biblical Christians continued to point out Scriptures that clearly argue for the deity of Christ (for example), the Watchtower Society would publish new editions of the New World Translation with those Scriptures changed. Here are some of the more prominent examples of intentional revisions:

Christ A Created Being 1 : The Word “Other”

In Colossians 1:16, the NWT inserts the word “other” despite its being completely absent from the original Greek text.

It does this to give the view that “all other things” were created by Christ, instead of what the text says, “all things were created by Christ.” This is to go along with their belief that Christ is a created being, which they believe because they deny the Trinity.

Christ A Created Being 2 : “The word was a god”

The most well-known of all the New World Translation perversions is John 1:1. The original Greek text reads, “the Word was God.” The NWT renders it as “the word was a god.”

This is not a matter of correct translation, but of reading one’s preconceived theology into the text, rather than allowing the text to speak for itself.

There is no indefinite article in Greek (in English, “a” or “an”), so any use of an indefinite article in English must be added by the translator. This is grammatically acceptable, so long as it does not change the meaning of the text.

There is a good reason why theos has no definite article in John 1:1 and why the New World Translation rendering is in error. There are three general rules we need to understand to see why :

1. In Greek, word order does not determine word usage like it does in English. In English, a sentence is structured according to word order: Subject – Verb – Object. Thus, “Harry called the dog” is not equivalent to “the dog called Harry.” But in Greek, a word’s function is determined by the case ending found attached to the word’s root. There are two case endings for the root theo: one is -s (theos), the other is -n (theon). The -s ending normally identifies a noun as being the subject of a sentence, while the -n ending normally identifies a noun as the direct object.

2. When a noun functions as a predicate nominative (in English, a noun that follows a being verb such as “is”), its case ending must match the noun’s case that it renames, so that the reader will know which noun it is defining. Therefore, theo must take the -s ending because it is renaming logos. Therefore, John 1:1 transliterates to “kai theos en ho logos.” Is theos the subject, or is logos? Both have the -s ending. The answer is found in the next rule.

3. In cases where two nouns appear, and both take the same case ending, the author will often add the definite article to the word that is the subject in order to avoid confusion. John put the definite article on logos (“the Word”) instead of on theos. So, logos is the subject, and theos is the predicate nominative. In English, this results in John 1:1 being read as “and the Word was God” (instead of “and God was the word”).

Inconsistent Translation Techniques :

The most revealing evidence of the Watchtower’s bias is their inconsistent translation technique.

Throughout the Gospel of John, the Greek word theon occurs without a definite article. The New World Translation renders none of these as “a god.” Even more inconsistent, in John 1:18, the NWT translates the same term as both “God” and “god” in the very same sentence.

The Watchtower, therefore, has no hard textual grounds for their translation—only their own theological bias. While New World Translation defenders might succeed in showing that John 1:1 can be translated as they have done, they cannot show that it is the proper translation. Nor can they explain the fact that that the NWT does not translate the same Greek phrases elsewhere in the Gospel of John the same way. It is only the pre-conceived heretical rejection of the deity of Christ that forces the Watchtower Society to inconsistently translate the Greek text, thus allowing their error to gain some semblance of legitimacy in the minds of those ignorant of the facts.

The NWT intentionally changes the rendering of the text to conform to Jehovah’s Witness theology. The New World Translation is a perversion, not a version, of the Bible.

The use of “JEHOVA” for YHWH / LORD ( in KJV English )

The name Jehovah is a translation of the Tetragrammaton (Hebrew: יהוה ), which in english is transliterated as YHWH or ALL CAPS “LORD” in KJV English, though the original pronunciation is unknown. Some pronounce it “Yahwey”, or “Yahuah”, etc. but it’s the same. )

The New World Translation uses the name Jehovah 6,979 times in the Old Testament.

The New World Translation also uses the name Jehovah 237 times in the New Testament where the extant texts use only the Greek words kyrios (Lord) and theos (God).

With modern translations, the use of Jehovah in the New Testament is very rare, but not unique to the New World Translation, but it’s not in the KJV

Walter Martin, an evangelical minister, wrote, “It can be shown from literally thousands of copies of the Greek New Testament that not once does the tetragrammaton appear.”

However, the translators of the New World Translation believed that the name Jehovah was present in the original manuscripts of the New Testament when quoting from the Old Testament, but replaced with the other terms by later copyists.

Based on this reasoning, the translators consider to have “restored the divine name”, though it is not present in any extant manuscripts.

Translation History : NWT First Released in 1950’s & 1961 Greek Scriptures :

The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (NWT) is a translation of the Bible published by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society; it is used and distributed by Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The New Testament portion was released first, in 1950, as The New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures, with the complete New World Translation of the Bible released in 1961.

It is not the first Bible to be published by the Watch Tower Society, but it is its first original translation of ancient Biblical Hebrew, Koine Greek, and Old Aramaic biblical texts.

Although commentators have said a scholarly effort went into the translation, critics have described it as “biased”.

JW’s Originally Used The KJV:

Until the release of the New World Translation, Jehovah’s Witnesses in English-speaking countries primarily used the King James Version. According to the publishers, one of the main reasons for producing a new translation was that most Bible versions in common use, including the Authorized Version (King James), employed archaic language.

The stated intention was to produce a fresh translation, free of archaisms. Additionally, over the centuries since the King James Version was produced, more copies of earlier manuscripts of the original texts in the Hebrew and Greek languages have become available.

According to the publishers, better manuscript evidence had made it possible to determine with greater accuracy what the original writers intended, particularly in more obscure passages, allowing linguists to better understand certain aspects of the original languages.

A fresh translation of the New Testament, which Jehovah’s Witnesses usually refer to as the Christian Greek Scriptures, was proposed in October 1946 by the president of the Watch Tower Society, Nathan H. Knorr.

Work began on December 2, 1947, when the “New World Bible Translation Committee” was formed, composed of Jehovah’s Witnesses who professed to be anointed. The Watch Tower Society is said to have “become aware” of the committee’s existence a year later. The committee agreed to turn over its translation to the Society for publication and on September 3, 1949, Knorr convened a joint meeting of the board of directors of both the Watch Tower Society’s New York and Pennsylvania corporations where he again announced to the directors the existence of the committee and that it was now able to print its new modern English translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures. Several chapters of the translation were read to the directors, who then voted to accept it as a gift. The New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures was released at a Jehovah’s Witness convention at Yankee Stadium, New York, on August 2, 1950.

The translation of the Old Testament, which Jehovah’s Witnesses refer to as the Hebrew Scriptures, was released in five volumes in 1953, 1955, 1957, 1958, and 1960.

The complete New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures was released as a single volume in 1961, and has since undergone various revisions. Cross references which had appeared in the six separate volumes were updated and included in the complete volume in the 1984 revision.

God's warning NOT to add or subtract from His word(s) : Scriptures

Perhaps you are a JW who believed the New World Translation is the only accurate translation of the original text of the Bible because that is what you were told. You were wrong but at least sincere. But can the same be said about the five men who first dared to and intentionally did change the word of God?

They knew that God had closed His Bible with a stern warning to add nothing to it and delete nothing from it:

[Revelation 22:18 KJV]
“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:”
[Revelation 22:19 KJV]
“And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.”

FOR REFERENCE : : NWT :
18  “I am bearing witness to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll;
19  and if anyone takes anything away from the words of the scroll of this prophecy, God will take his portion away from the trees of life and out of the holy city, things that are written about in this scroll.

Below are side-by-side Comparisons of KJV vs. NWT. Read each one, decide if this has improved ‘archaic’ text and simply updated the terms, or have the JW’s changed and / or added to or subtracted from the texts?

Ephesians 3:9 NWT :
9  and should make everyone see* the administration of the sacred secret that has been hidden through the ages in God, who created all things.

Ephesians 3:9 KJV :

Matthew 12:6
NWT :
6  But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.

[Matthew 12:6 KJV]
“But I say unto you, That in this place is [one] greater than the temple.“

Are italicized words inspired? This verse proves they are essential to capture the true sense of the scriptures. In the KJB, the sense clearly reveals Jesus, a person, is the “one” who is greater than the temple. But modern versions take away the possibility that Jesus is calling himself greater than the temple when they read “something” is greater. See also: Matthew 12:42

By adding the word “something”, modern versions eliminate Christ as the one who is greater than Solomon. See also: Matthew 12:6

[Matthew 12:42 KJV]
“The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon [is] here.”

Blasphemy is against God.

31  “For this reason I say to you, every sort of sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the spirit will not be forgiven.

32  For example, whoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the holy spirit, it will not be forgiven him, no, not in this system of things nor in that to come.

Blasphemy is against God.

[Matthew 12:31 KJV]
“Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

“[Matthew 12:32 KJV]

“And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the [world] to come.”

How does the Bible describe blasphemy?

The Bible defines blasphemy as showing contempt for God, such as slandering His name, claiming deity, or attributing God’s work to Satan, with severe penalties under the Law (Leviticus 24). Jesus highlights the unique severity of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, calling it unforgivable, which involves persistently rejecting the Spirit’s work of convicting people about Christ, essentially hardening one’s heart against God’s redemptive work.

Key aspects of blasphemy in the Bible:

Definition:
Khoshesh (Hebrew): Cursing or profaning God’s name (Exodus 20:7).
Blasphemia (Greek): Slanderous speech or contempt against the divine, God’s character, or His works (John 10:33).

Examples in Scripture:

A man cursing God’s name in the wilderness (Leviticus 24:10-16).
The Pharisees accusing Jesus of casting out demons by Beelzebub (Satan) (Matthew 12:24).
Jesus being accused of blasphemy for claiming to be God (John 10:33).

The Unforgivable Sin:

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is described as unforgivable (Matthew 12:31-32; Mark 3:29).

This isn’t a single impulsive word but a deliberate, persistent rejection and hardening of the heart against the Holy Spirit’s conviction, refusing God’s offer of forgiveness through Christ (Matthew 12:31, Mark 3:29).

In summary:

Blasphemy is a serious offense against God’s holiness, but the Bible offers hope for forgiveness for most sins, emphasizing that the unforgivable act is a final, unrepentant resistance to the Holy Spirit’s work in drawing people to Christ

[Acts 5:3-4 KJV] ( HOLY GHOST )

“But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back [part] of the price of the land?”
“Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”

“He” is a personal pronoun. The Holy Spirit is a person. He also does something in this verse that only persons can do. He testifies.

When was the last time a power source like electricity or gravity testified?

The Holy Spirit is described as a person, a “he.” He’s complete with a mind, a will, emotions, and communication abilities. He’s also described as having the attributes of God: life in himself, omniscience, omnipresence, goodness, eternity, holiness, and truth.

Some passages identify the Spirit with God, and one specifically calls him “God.” He’s not merely the force or power of God. He is a person distinct from the Father and the Son who exhibits the attributes of God and is called “God.”

The term for “will” is the Greek term “boulomai.” It’s only used of persons in the entire New Testament, and, interestingly enough, in Matthew 11:27, it tells us that Jesus has a “boulomai,” a will, and in Hebrews 6:17, it tells us that the Father has a “boulomai.” The Father has a will.
It’s clear from these verses that the Holy spirit is described as a person, not as an impersonal force. Notice the difference between “it” and “he” also.

JHN 20:28
NWT :
28 In answer Thomas said to him: “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him: “Because you have seen me, have you believed? Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.”
30 To be sure, Jesus also performed many other signs before the disciples, which are not written down in this scroll.
31 But these have been written down so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and because of believing, you may have life by means of his name.

JHN 20:28
KJV :
[Jhn 20:28 KJV] And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
[Jhn 20:29 KJV] Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed [are] they that have not seen, and [yet] have believed.
[Jhn 20:30 KJV] And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
[Jhn 20:31 KJV] But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

JOHN 9:35
NWT :
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and on finding him, he said: “Are you putting faith in the Son of man?”
36 The man answered: “And who is he, sir, so that I may put faith in him?”
37 Jesus said to him: “You have seen him, and in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
38 He said: “I do put faith in him, Lord.” And he did obeisance to him.
39 Jesus then said: “For this judgment I came into this world, that those not seeing might seeu and those seeing might become blind.”
40 Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him: “We are not blind also, are we?”
41 Jesus said to them: “If you were blind, you would have no sin. But now you say, ‘We see.’ Your sin remains.”

JOHN 9:35
KJV :

[Jhn 9:37 KJV] And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
[Jhn 9:38 KJV] And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
[Jhn 9:39 KJV] And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
[Jhn 9:40 KJV] And [some] of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
[Jhn 9:41 KJV] Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

12 “I am the One who declared and saved and made known When there was no foreign god among you. So you are my witnesses,” declares Jehovah, “and I am God.

Is it not I, Jehovah? There is no other God but me; A righteous God and a Savior, there is none besides me.
22  Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth, For I am God, and there is no one else.

JOHN 10:26-39
NWT :
26 But you do not believe, because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them everlasting life,y and they will by no means ever be destroyed, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is something greater than all other things, and no one can snatch them out of the hand of the Father.
I and the Father are one.
Once again the Jews picked up stones to stone him. Jesus replied to them: “I displayed to you many fine works from the Father. For which of those works are you stoning me?” The Jews answered him: “We are stoning you, not for a fine work, but for blasphemy; for you, although being a man, make yourself a god.”
Jesus answered them: “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said: “You are gods”’? If he called ‘gods’ those against* whom the word of God came—and yet the scripture cannot be nullified— do you say to me* whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?
If I am not doing the works of my Father, do not believe me. But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may come to know and may continue knowing that the Father is in union with me and I am in union with the Father.”
So they tried again to seize him, but he escaped from their reach.

JOHN 10:26-39
KJV :
[Jhn 10:26 KJV] But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
[Jhn 10:27 KJV] My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
[Jhn 10:28 KJV] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any [man] pluck them out of my hand.
[Jhn 10:29 KJV] My Father, which gave [them] me, is greater than all; and no [man] is able to pluck [them] out of my Father’s hand.
[Jhn 10:30 KJV] I and [my] Father are one.
[Jhn 10:31 KJV] Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
[Jhn 10:32 KJV] Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
[Jhn 10:33 KJV] The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
[Jhn 10:34 KJV] Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
[Jhn 10:35 KJV] If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
[Jhn 10:36 KJV] Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
[Jhn 10:37 KJV] If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
[Jhn 10:38 KJV] But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father [is] in me, and I in him.
[Jhn 10:39 KJV] Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,

LUKE 5:20
NWT :
20 When he saw their faith, he said: “Man, your sins are forgiven.”
21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees started to reason, saying: “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins except God alone?”
22 But Jesus, discerning their reasoning, said in answer to them: “What are you reasoning in your hearts?
23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24 But in order for you to know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins—” he said to the paralyzed man: “I say to you, Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go to your home.”
25 At that he stood up before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went to his home, glorifying God.
26 Then one and all were seized with amazement, and they began to glorify God, and they became filled with awe, saying: “We have seen wonderful things today!”

[Luk 5:24 KJV] But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
[Luk 5:25 KJV] And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
[Luk 5:26 KJV] And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
