Up Front: Why include this on our site?
We are not here to attack anyone…but we are simply asking some spritual questions and bringing light to things that are done in the dark.
Freemasons do things in the dark and we will give a scripture rebuke to the practice of Freemasonry with the hopes that those who practice “The Craft” will repent and believe the gospel.
[Matt 16:26 KJV] For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
[Mark 8:37 KJV] Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
If Jesus can't be talked about openly at the Lodge, then who stands at the door and knocks at the lodge when meetings, etc. takes place? Jesus warned;
[Gal 6:7 KJV] Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
[Gal 6:8 KJV] For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
[Rev 3:14 KJV] And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
[Rev 3:16 KJV] So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
[Rev 3:17 KJV] Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
[Rev 3:18 KJV] I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
[Rev 3:19 KJV] As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
[Rev 3:20 KJV] Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
[Rev 3:21 KJV] To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
[Rev 3:22 KJV] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
All will be revealed ; Don't Fear Them That Threaten The Body
Masons take oaths that they be killed if they betray the masons.
They claim they are doing things for God sometimes and yet Jesus said:
[Matt 10:24 KJV] The disciple is not above [his] master, nor the servant above his lord.
[Matt 10:25 KJV] It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more [shall they call] them of his household?
[Matt 10:26 KJV] Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
[Matt 10:27 KJV] What I tell you in darkness, [that] speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, [that] preach ye upon the housetops.
[Matt 10:28 KJV] And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Ask Yourself: Does Freemasonry offer 'light' or does Jesus?
[John 8:12 KJV] Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
[Eph 5:8 KJV] For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
[Eph 5:9 KJV] (For the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
[Eph 5:10 KJV] Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
[Eph 5:11 KJV] And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove [them].
[Eph 5:12 KJV] For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
[Eph 5:13 KJV] But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
[Eph 5:14 KJV] Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
[Eph 5:15 KJV] See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
[Eph 5:16 KJV] Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Freemasons ceremonies blind candidates and then claim to offer light...but Jesus said:
[Matt 15:13 KJV] But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
[Matt 15:14 KJV] Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
Freemasons call themselves a brotherhood...but they accept all men that believe in a whatever God they like...
[Mark 3:33 KJV] And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?
[Mark 3:34 KJV] And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
[Mark 3:35 KJV] For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
next set on the will of God…
[Gal 1:1 KJV] Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)
[Gal 1:2 KJV] And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia:
[Gal 1:3 KJV] Grace [be] to you and peace from God the Father, and [from] our Lord Jesus Christ,
[Gal 1:4 KJV] Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
[Gal 1:5 KJV] To whom [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen.
[Gal 1:6 KJV] I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
[Gal 1:7 KJV] Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
[Gal 1:8 KJV] But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
[Gal 1:9 KJV] As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
They asked Jesus what the work and will of God is?
[John 6:28 KJV] Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
[John 6:29 KJV] Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
Are you recruiting to Jesus or 'the Grand Architect'?? Jesus warned:
[Matt 12:30 KJV] He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
Does Freemasonry Have The Ladder To Ascend? Are You Working Your Way To Heaven?
[John 1:51 KJV] And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
Freemasons work on a foundation of Black and White...But in God is no darkness...
[1 John 1:5 KJV] This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
[1 John 1:6 KJV] If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
[1 John 1:7 KJV] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
[1 John 1:8 KJV] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
[1 John 1:9 KJV] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
[1 John 1:10 KJV] If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Masons are 'builders'...but as an 'organization' they reject Jesus...
[Luke 20:17 KJV] And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
[Luke 20:18 KJV] Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
A Warning and Invitation To Come Out...
[Eph 5:1 KJV] Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
[Eph 5:2 KJV] And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
[Eph 5:3 KJV] But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
[Eph 5:4 KJV] Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
[Eph 5:5 KJV] For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
[Eph 5:6 KJV] Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
[Eph 5:7 KJV] Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
[Eph 5:17 KJV] Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord [is].
[Eph 5:18 KJV] And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
[Eph 5:19 KJV] Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
[Eph 5:20 KJV] Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
[Eph 5:21 KJV] Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
Every Army Needs Grunts...Satan's Too...Disposable Heros...Masons Are Swindling Their Members....
In summary :
Every army needs it’s grunts. To get the morale high you gotta make the grunts think they are the good guys fighting the good fight. Once they get through basic the real war begins.
Here is what came up on a basic search….perhaps in other sections we will go further in rebuking this ….but first let’s just see what Mr. Google says:
Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest fraternal organization, evolving from medieval stonemason guilds into a 300-year-old society focused on charity, brotherly love, and personal moral development. It is a male-only, non-religious, non-political, and secretive group requiring members to believe in a Supreme Being.
Famous Freemasons
Founding Fathers: George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.
Leaders & Royalty: Winston Churchill, George Canning, and The Duke of Kent.
Explorers: Buzz Aldrin.
Key Aspects of Freemasonry
Structure: Members meet in local “lodges” and progress through three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason.
Purpose: Focused on self-improvement, fellowship, and community service.
Symbols: Common symbols include the square and compass (morality), the letter “G” (geometry/God), and the All-seeing Eye.
Misconceptions: While often associated with conspiracy theories, it is considered a philanthropic, social, and networking organization.
Membership usually involves being recommended by existing members and demonstrating good character.
"Making good men better" - but how...only Christ can do that...Jesus said none good but God...
[Matt 23:13 KJV] But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in [yourselves], neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
[Matt 23:14 KJV] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
[Matt 23:15 KJV] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
“Making good men better” is a core principle of Freemasonry, signifying its goal to improve character through moral and ethical development, using symbolic lessons, rituals, and fraternal support to encourage virtues like integrity, charity, and duty, helping members become more compassionate and responsible citizens, leaders, and family men. It’s a journey of self-improvement, not perfection, focused on continuous growth by applying universal moral truths common to many faiths, fostering accountability and service to community and God.
How Freemasonry aims to make good men better:
Moral & Ethical Framework: Uses allegories and symbols from operative masonry (stone building) to teach virtues like justice, temperance, prudence, and wisdom.
Self-Reflection: Encourages members to examine their own lives and actions, asking how they live their values and impact others.
Brotherhood: Provides a supportive network where men hold each other accountable and learn from each other’s positive examples, fostering fraternal love and truth.
Service & Charity: Extends principles beyond the lodge, promoting acts of charity and service to family, country, and humanity.
Personal Growth: Acknowledges that men are imperfect and offers tools for lifelong learning, making them more mindful, compassionate, and responsible individuals.
What it means in practice:
A Mason strives to be a better husband, father, and community member.
He applies lessons of honor, integrity, and duty in his daily life.
He commits to personal betterment, not just being a member.
In essence, Freemasonry serves as a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols, guiding men to become more virtuous and productive members of society.
[Rom 3:9 KJV] What then? are we better [than they]? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
[Rom 3:10 KJV] As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
[Rom 3:11 KJV] There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
[Rom 3:12 KJV] They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
[Rom 3:13 KJV] Their throat [is] an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps [is] under their lips:
[Rom 3:14 KJV] Whose mouth [is] full of cursing and bitterness:
[Rom 3:15 KJV] Their feet [are] swift to shed blood:
[Rom 3:16 KJV] Destruction and misery [are] in their ways:
[Rom 3:17 KJV] And the way of peace have they not known:
[Rom 3:18 KJV] There is no fear of God before their eyes.
[Rom 3:19 KJV] Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
[Rom 3:20 KJV] Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin.
[Rom 3:21 KJV] But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
[Rom 3:22 KJV] Even the righteousness of God [which is] by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
[Rom 3:23 KJV] For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
[Rom 3:24 KJV] Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
[Rom 3:25 KJV] Whom God hath set forth [to be] a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
[Rom 3:26 KJV] To declare, [I say], at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
[Rom 3:27 KJV] Where [is] boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
[Rom 3:28 KJV] Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
[Rom 3:29 KJV] [Is he] the God of the Jews only? [is he] not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
[Rom 3:30 KJV] Seeing [it is] one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
[Rom 3:31 KJV] Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
Open Letter & List of Questions For Masons :
My grandfather was a mason, and I love him dearly and always will. He was not a perfect man, but to me he was a wonderful grandfather and I would not trade him for any other. He generally kept quiet about masonry during my lifetime, although I hear he was once a proud mason. I don’t know why he quit…but he did…
I believe he kept paying his dues as he had a masonic ritual at his funeral, however I have questions that have come up beause of the research that I have done and I feel that it’s important to ask some questions to anyone who is a Christian as well as a mason.
Open questions for anyone practicing or involved with masonry in the past or the present :
Q’s ABOUT PERSON
How long been mason?
What made you decide to be a mason?
Q’s ABOUT MASONRY
What should I take away from the fact that Masonry upset me and my family due to it’s secrecy & left a lasting impression on them?
Are all his mason brothers his “brothers”?
NOTE: Even if they a Muslim or just believe in higher power
Does wife know he a mason? Is she ( Eastern Star…etc…I see stuff online ) .
Has she expressed concerns?
Has anything ever given you pause to think this is against Christian doctrines? If so – what….If not…why do you think it’s so frowned upon?
Should a born again Christian like me join the Masons?
Do you understand why someone like me would hesistate before joining a secret club?
If I had a wife or friend why should I join something that I can not share with them…what fruit would develop in my marriage from that secrecy?
Why have more than one Mason I’ve spoken to asked me if I’m a respecter of persons ( Shriners )?
Why have more than one Mason I’ve spoken to told me the same story about the internet?
Why can they not share the gospel in meeting if they pray first to Grand Architect of the Universe? – If Jesus is the Word and by Him are all things then how do the Christian Masons cope with that?
Do all masons imitate and re-enact Hiram Abiff – does he believe that he raised from dead?
Do Masons teach that they can make a peson a better person? How do they do that without Jesus?
If the will of the father is to believe on He whom He sent why does some say the lodge doing things for God?
If something built upon a black and white duality checkerboard, how is that built on Christ?
Do Masons take an oath? If Yes – How does He as a Christian reconcile making oaths?
[Mat 5:33-37 KJV] “Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
What does he tell a child who asks about his belt or sign in his garage?
What would he have told me if I had asked to be a Mason?
What does he make about the signs and symbols all around us in the world?
If it’s a harmless thing then why do I see them online with strip tease type stuff?
What’s his stance on trans-humanism?
Do you think God would want everyone to be a Mason?
If something built upon a black and white duality checkerboard, how is that built on Christ?
Where does he stand on the New World Order?
Where does he stand on what the Pope said?
What would his advice be to Christians within the Catholic church that heard that?
QUOTE : During his recent visit to Singapore, Pope Francis went further than any of his predecessors in recognizing the value of non-Christian traditions. “All religions are paths to God,” Francis told a group of young people. “There is only one God, and religions are like languages, paths to reach God. Some Sikh, some Muslim, some Hindu, some Christian.”
What would his advice be to a new Christian that heard these bad things about Masonry be?
GAOTU grand architect of the Universe? Pray to him?
My sister and others who are gay: what would she think if she saw that emblem on you?
If I tell my sister who is gay and in what she calls a marriage is living in sin and for the flesh, and that that through repentance and the Holy Spirit she can overcome that…would it be ok for her to say she did so, but also march in pride parardes ?
OCCULT = HIDDEN. THE HIDDEN HAND.
Many including Masons have shown us where their alliegience lies…secrecy…so they feel they are free from their sins if we like sheep are lead by them from behind the scenes.
Does he know what the Utara Bodhi Mudra is?
University of fizz Ed shirt vs. emblems on items : Why did I feel it would cast a stumblingblock? What was he thinking?
Albert Pike quote :
I know the higher up Freemasons learn that the true Architect of the universe is LUCIFER. However LUCIFER can mean Venus, and light. No it does not mean SATAN! Albert Pike put it clearly in his letter to Mazzini:
“The Third World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences caused by the “agentur” of the “Illuminati” between the political Zionists and the leaders of Islamic World. The war must be conducted in such a way that Islam (the Moslem Arabic World) and political Zionism (the State of Israel) mutually destroy each other. Meanwhile the other nations, once more divided on this issue will be constrained to fight to the point of complete physical, moral, spiritual and economical exhaustion…We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of LUCIFER, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time.”
Scriptures to remind Masons...
recovering of sight to the blind
[Luk 4:18-19 KJV] “The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Provide things honest in the sight of all men
[Rom 12:17-18 KJV] “Recompense to no man evil for evil.. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
and in secret have I said nothing.”
[Jhn 18:19-20 KJV] “The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.”
preach ye upon the housetops.
[Mat 10:27-28 KJV] “What I tell you in darkness, [that] speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, [that] preach ye upon the housetops. And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Abstain from all appearance of evil
[1Th 5:19-22 KJV] “Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.”
judgment must begin at the house of God:
[1Pe 4:1-19 KJV] “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of [his] time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of [our] life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of [you]: Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, [even so] minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, [let him speak] as the oracles of God; if any man minister, [let him do it] as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy [are ye]; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or [as] a thief, or [as] an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters. Yet if [any man suffer] as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls [to him] in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.”
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
[Pro 3:5-12 KJV] “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son [in whom] he delighteth.”
damnable heresies
[2Pe 2:1-3 KJV] “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”
Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:
[2Co 6:1-18 KJV] “We then, [as] workers together [with him], beseech [you] also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now [is] the accepted time; behold, now [is] the day of salvation.) Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: But in all [things] approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and [yet] true; As unknown, and [yet] well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and [yet] possessing all things. O [ye] Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged. Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels. Now for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto [my] children,) be ye also enlarged. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
NAKED AND UNASHAMED vs. NAKED WITH APRON.
[Gen 2:25 KJV] “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”
[Gen 3:6-13 KJV] “And when the woman saw that the tree [was] good for food, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where [art] thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I [was] naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou [wast] naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest [to be] with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What [is] this [that] thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.”
now for a little space
[Ezr 9:7-11 KJV] “Since the days of our fathers [have] we [been] in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, [and] our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as [it is] this day. And now for a little space grace hath been [shewed] from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage. For we [were] bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.”
SHRINERS : alms before men
[Mat 6:1-4 KJV] “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.”
EPHESUS
[1Ti 1:3-7 KJV] “As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: [so do]. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and [of] a good conscience, and [of] faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.”
[Rev 2:1-7 KJV] “Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have [somewhat] against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.”
Shame Speak
[Eph 5:3-21 KJV] “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove [them]. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord [is]. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”
except they be agreed
[Amo 3:3 KJV] “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”
LORD a jealous God
[Exo 34:12-17 KJV] “Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name [is] Jealous, [is] a jealous God: Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and [one] call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.”
singleness of heart,
[Act 2:46 KJV] “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,”
[Eph 6:5 KJV] “Servants, be obedient to them that are [your] masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;”
[Col 3:22 KJV] “Servants, obey in all things [your] masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:”
the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation]
[Deu 5:7-10 KJV] “Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Thou shalt not make thee [any] graven image, [or] any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the waters beneath the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me, And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.”
EYE DARKNESS & TWO MASTERS ( MASONS )
[Mat 6:22-24 KJV] “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great [is] that darkness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
altar of stones: not in temples made with hands;
[Deu 27:5-6 KJV] “And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones: thou shalt not lift up [any] iron [tool] upon them. Thou shalt build the altar of the LORD thy God of whole stones: and thou shalt offer burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD thy God:”
[Act 17:24 KJV] “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;”
Neither shalt thou go up by steps // LADDER SON OF MAN…
[Exo 20:25-26 KJV] “And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.”
[Jhn 1:51 KJV] “And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”
no respect of persons with God
[Rom 2:11 KJV] “For there is no respect of persons with God.”
bishop then must be blameless
[1Ti 3:2, 12 KJV] “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; … Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.”
stumblingblock & PERGAMOS
[Lev 19:14 KJV] “Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I [am] the LORD.”
[Isa 57:14 KJV] “And shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumblingblock out of the way of my people.”
[1Co 8:9 KJV] “But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.”
[Rev 2:12-17 KJV] “And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, [even] where Satan’s seat [is]: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas [was] my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it].”
SNARE
[Luk 21:20-36 KJV] “And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and [so] that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”

The Question of Freemasonry
The following article is from the Christian Bulletin Board, COMPUTERS FOR CHRIST.
The question of the Christian stand regarding Freemasonry seems to confront our ministry at every turn lately. Because we have seen the exact parallels of the Masonic legends and rituals carried throughout the ‘mysteries’ of Mormonism, we have had to study deeply into Masonic origins, purposes and doctrine.
In doing so, we have had to come to grips with the sad fact that the esoteric doctrines of Freemasonry separate it, just as unequivocally as do those of Mormonism, from the Christian theology. This holds true for every branch of Masonry, from the Shriners to the Blue Lodge, the Eastern Star, the Demolay, Job’s Daughters and the Rainbow Girls!
We know that this will cause offense to many Masons, and for that we are truly sorry. But we would rather that the Mason be offended at us and be restored to true fellowship with Jesus Christ, than to remain silent any longer.
This word of warning is not to the Masonic fraternity at large, but to those Masons who claim to be both Masons and Christians!
A recent newspaper insert, called “FREEMASONRY – A WAY OF LIFE” appeared in many metropolitan areas. It pictured Freemasonry as a family centered, fraternal, benevolent organization, “as American as apple pie!” (page 7)
Not only does the article demonstrate the strength of Freemasonry among our political leaders (both past and present), but makes much of its use of the Holy Bible and its foundational belief in God. Masonry has a very strong representation in the Christian denominations through-out the world. In many of the churches we visit, we finds Masons involved as deacons, elders, board members and even as pastors.
Their claim and the claim of every Mason to the outside world, is that Masonry and Christianity are totally compatible. They tell us that religion is the experience of relating to God, and Masonry the experience of relating to mankind. While separate, they can and do naturally coexist.
The above mentioned article explains its ‘religious’ position this way, “Masonry is NOT a religion in any sense of the word, yet it is religious. Church membership is not a requirement, yet membership in ANY church is no bar to admission. There is nothing in the requirements of Masonry to prevent a Catholic, a Mohammedan, a Jew, a Buddhist, a Protestant, a Mormon, or any member of any religion from becoming a member”. (page 3)
On the surface, this might seem quite reasonable. We find no offense in being involved in social, civic and benevolent activities with people of other religious and ethnic backgrounds. In fact, it’s really an integral part of the excitement of life! But, when it comes to our own personal worship of God, and His revelation to us of His Word, there are some very clear guidelines!
If Freemasonry is truly what it professes publicly, then “Bravo!”; it is a welcome fellowship. If it is being deceptive, then it should be exposed. It is that simple.
Let’s see what Masonry TRULY teaches within its closed doors, and through its own published documents. NO ‘Anti-Masonic’ publications will be cited in explaining their TRUE theological position.
The key document from which we will quote is the most readily available and universally approved doctrinal book of Freemasonry, “Morals And Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry”, By Albert Pike, Grand Commander, 1859-1891. Its title page states that it was prepared for the “Supreme Council of the Thirty-Third Degree and Published by its Authority”. Originally published in 1871, I have used the 1966 Edition. Except where other sources are noted, I will cite page numbers only, when using this work.
ALL TRUTH
(Masonry)…”The custodian and depository (since Enoch) of the great philosophical and religious truths, unknown to the world at large, and handed down from age to age by an unbroken current of tradition, embodied in symbols, emblems and allegories”. (page 210)
TEMPLE OF RELIGION
“Every Masonic Temple is a Temple of Religion, and its teachings are instructions in religion” (page 213)
THE FOUNDATION
“It (Masonry) is the universal, eternal, immutable religion, such as God planted it in the heart of universal humanity. No creed has ever been long-lived that was not built on this foundation. It is the base and they are the superstructure” (page 219)
A RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION
“Masonry is, in every sense of the word, except one, and that its least philosophical, an eminently religious institution – that it is indebted solely to the religious element which it contains for its origin and for its continued existence and that without this religious element it would scarcely be worthy of cultivation by the wise and good.”…”Freemasonry is NOT Christianity nor a substitute for it”….”But the religion of Masonry is not sectarian. t admits men of every creed within its hospitable bosom, rejecting none and approving none for his particular faith”…”Masonry, then, is, indeed, a religious institution; and on this ground mainly, if not alone, should the religious Mason defend it.” (Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, Albert G. Mackey, Revised Edition, 1921, pages 618, 619)
BUDDHA
“The first Masonic legislator whose memory is preserved to us by history, was Buddha, who, about a thousand years before the Christian era, reformed the religion of Manous.” (page 277)
REVERENCES ALL REFORMERS
“It (Masonry) reverences all the great reformers. It sees in Moses, the lawgiver to the Jews, in Confucius and Zoroaster, in Jesus of Nazareth, and in the Arabian Iconoclast, great teachers of morality, and eminent reformers, if no more; and allows every brother of the order to assign to each such higher and even divine characteristics as his creed and truth require.” (page 525)
THE BAALIM
“Masonry, around whose altars the Christian, the Hebrew, the Moslem, the Brahmin, the followers of Confucius and Zoroaster, can assemble as brethren and unite in prayer to the one God who is above ALL the Baalim, must needs leave it to each of its initiates to look for the foundation of his faith and hope to the written scriptures of his own religion.” (page 226) Note: The word, Baalim, is simply defined as “false god or idol”. The Masonic author has included the God of the Christian in that category.
THE INCOMPREHENSIBLE BIBLE
The teachers, even of Christianity, are, in general, the most ignorant of the true meaning of that which they teach. There is no book of which so little is known as the Bible. To most who read it, it is as incomprehensible as the Sohar.” (page 105)
THE INCOMPLETE BIBLE
“All truly dogmatic religions have issued from the Kabalah and return to it. Everything scientific and grand in the religious dreams of the Illuminati, Jacob Boehme, Swedenborg, Saint-Martin, and others, is borrowed from the Kabalah; all the Masonic associations owe to it their secrets and their symbols. The Kabalah alone consecrates the Alliance of the Universal Reason and the Divine Word;…
The Bible, with all the allegories it contains, expresses, in an incomplete and veiled manner only, the religious science of the Hebrews. The doctrine of Moses and the Prophets, identical at bottom with that of the ancient Egyptians, also had its outward meaning and its veils.
“The Hebrew books were written only to recall to memory the traditions; and they were written in symbols unintelligible to the profane… thus was a second Bible born, unknown to, or rather uncomprehended by, the Christians; a collection, they say, of monstrous absurdities.
“One is filled with admiration, on penetrating into the Sanctuary of the Kabalah, at seeing a doctrine so logical, so simple and at the same time so absolute.” (pages 744-745) Note: The ‘Kabalah is a book of ancient Jewish mysticism and magic.
THE SOURCE OF ALL GOOD
“Everything good in nature comes from OSIRIS – order, harmony, and the favorable temperature of the seasons and celestial periods.” (page 476) Note: Osiris was the ancient Egyptian god whose annual death and resurrection personified the self-renewing vitality and fertility of nature.
MASONRY CONCEALS ITS TRUTHS
“Masonry, like all the religions, all the Mysteries, Hermeticism and Alchemy, CONCEALS its secrets from all except the Adepts and Sages, or the Elect, and uses false explanations and misinterpretations of its symbols to mislead those who deserve only to be misled; to conceal the Truth, which it calls Light, from them, and to draw them away from it. Truth is not for those who are unworthy or unable to receive it, or would pervert it.” (pages 104-105)
THE BLUE LODGE TO BE DECEIVED!
“The Blue Degrees are but the outer court or portico of the Temple. Part of the symbols are displayed there to the Initiate, but he is intentionally misled by false interpretations. It is not intended that he shall understand them, but it is intended that he shall imagine he understands them.” (page 819)
WORSHIPFUL MASTER
“Worshipful Master: The Head and Chief of the Lodge, the Source of Light, of Knowledge and instruction in Masonry. He personifies the Sublime Art of Masonry and is the Spokesman thereof.” (Arthur Waite, A New Encyclopedia of Freemasonry,1970, page 24)
OBEDIENCE THE FIRST RULE
The first duty of every Mason is to obey the Mandate of the Master…The order must at once be obeyed; its character and its consequences may be matters of subsequent inquiry. The Masonic rule of obedience is like the nautical, imperative: ‘Obey orders, even if you break owners.'” Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, Albert Mackey, page 525)
THE ANGEL OF LIGHT
“To prevent the light from escaping at once, the DEMONS forbade Adam to eat the fruit of ‘knowledge of good and evil’, by which he would have known the Empire of Light and that of Darkness. He obeyed; an ANGEL OF LIGHT induced him to transgress, and gave him the means of victory; but the DEMONS created Eve, who seduced him into an act of Sensualism, that enfeebled him, and bound him anew in the bonds of matter. This is repeated in the case of every man that lives.”
“It (The Principle or Angel of Light) but put on the appearance of a human body and took the name of Christ in the Messiah, only to accommodate itself to the language of the Jews. The Light did its work, turning the Jews from the adoration of the Evil Principle, and the Pagans from the worship of the DEMONS. But the Chief of the Empire of Darkness caused him to be crucified by the Jews. Still, he suffered in appearance only…” (page 567)
Note: This is, in its entirety, the exact opposite of Biblical doctrine. It places the ‘saving power’ and position of Jesus Christ at the feet of Lucifer and labels the Holy God of Israel a Demon. It denies the whole purpose of Christ’s death on the Cross and puts Lucifer there, instead!
THE ENERGIES OF LUCIFER
“When the Mason Learns that the Key to the warrior on the block is the proper application of the dynamo of living power, he has learned the Mystery of his Craft. The seething energies of LUCIFER are in his hands and before he may step onward and upward, he must prove his ability to properly apply (this) energy.” (Locked Keys of Freemasonry, Manly P. Hall, page 48)
YES, LUCIFER IS GOD
“That which we must say to the crowd is – We worship a God, but it is the God that one adores without superstition. “To you, Sovereign Grand Inspectors General, we say this, that you may repeat it to the Brethren of the 32nd, 31st and 30th degrees – The Masonic Religion should be, by all of us initiates of the high degrees, maintained in the purity of the Luciferian Doctrine.
“If Lucifer were not God, would Adonay (The God of the Christians) whose deeds prove his cruelty, perfidy and hatred of man, barbarism and repulsion for science, would Adonay and his priests, calumniate him?
“Yes, Lucifer is God, and unfortunately Adonay is also god. For the eternal law is that there is no light without shade, no beauty without ugliness, no white without black, for the absolute can only exist as two gods: darkness being necessary for light to serve as its foil as the pedestal is necessary to the statue, and the brake to the locomotive.
“Thus, the doctrine of Satanism is a heresy; and the true and pure philosophical religion is the belief in Lucifer, the equal of Adonay; but Lucifer, God of Light and God of Good, is struggling for humanity against Adonay, the God of Darkness and Evil” (Instructions to the 23 Supreme Councils of the World, Albert Pike, Grand Commander, Sovereign Pontiff of Universal Freemasonry, July 14, 1889. Recorded by A.C. De La Rive, La Femme et l’Enfant dans la Franc-Maconnerie Universelle. (page 588)
Note: The Word of God, the Bible, clearly places Lucifer in his proper place, gives God’s reasons for placing him there. “How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.” (ISA 14:12-15)
THE GRAND ARCHITECT OF THE UNIVERSE
Masonic ritual is concerned with the recovery of the name of God – supposedly lost through the murder, during the building of Solomon’s Temple of the Architect, Hiram Abiff – a ‘Quest’ not attained until the ROYAL ARCH DEGREE. It is here that the SECRET NAME of the DEITY OF MASONRY is revealed. That name is ‘JAOBULON’. ‘JAO’ is the Greek word for Jehovah. ‘BUL’ is a rendering of the name, BAAL. ‘ON’ is the term used in the Babylonian mysteries to call upon the deity, ‘OSIRIS’! The secret ritual book of the Craft prints the letters J.B.O. It states that: “We three do meet and agree – in peace, love and unity – the Sacred Word to keep – and never to divulge the same – until we three, or three such as we – do meet and agree.” Thus, no Royal Arch Mason can pronounce the whole sacred name by himself!
What you see represented, then, as the god of Freemasonry, is a three headed monster so remote from the Christian trinity as to be so blasphemous as to damn the eternal soul of anyone who would dare to pronounce its name in a ritual of worship!
I AM THAT I AM
In the closing ceremonies of the ritual for the Royal Arch degree, the candidate is asked, “Brother Inspector, what are you?” and he replies, “I AM THAT I AM”. Can you imagine that? When Moses asked God to name himself, God said, “I AM THAT I AM” and he said, this is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'” (Exodus 3:14).
Tell us how a Christian who is a Royal Arch Mason can take to himself the very name of the God of Israel? The God of the Christian faith said, “Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.” All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame. (Isaiah 44:8, 9)
USURPING THE PRIESTHOOD OF JESUS
In the 19th level of Freemasonry, the Initiate receives the degree of GRAND PONTIFF. It is during this ritual that the candidate swears an oath of secrecy and an oath of total obedience “to any Chapter of this degree to which I may belong; and the edicts, laws and mandates of the Grand Consistory of Sublime Princes and Commanders of the Royal Secret, as well as those of the Supreme Council of the 33rd degree”..
It is then that the ‘Thrice Puissant’ anoints him with oil on the crown of his head and says: “Be Thou a Priest Forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” After receiving the password (Emanuel) and the sacred word (Alleluia), he is dressed in a robe of white linen and given a cordon (a ribbon or sash of honor worn across the breast) of crimson color, with 12 stars representing “the 12 gates of the ‘new city’, and the twelve signs of the Zodiac, the twelve fruits of the tree of life, the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve Apostles” (Scottish Rite Masonry Illustrated, The Complete Ritual, Vol. 2, pages 26-27, E. Cook Publications, 1974)
It must be pointed out that what has taken place here, is the Masonic, Luciferian priesthood taking upon itself, the Holy Priesthood of Jesus Christ. That is a Priesthood that can be held by only one person and that one person is clearly defined in scripture as Jesus Christ!
Chapters 7 and 8 of the Book of Hebrews clearly explains that it was ANOTHER priest to be raised up, not a group of priests! This Priest would be our HIGH PRIEST and would be able to save from the Uttermost! He would have ‘endless life’! The holder of THIS Priesthood would be ‘holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners and made higher than the heavens (7:26). This is Jesus, our Holy Lord and God!
This ‘ritual’ takes Christ’s Holy Priesthood from Him, and the Grand Pontiff boldly puts upon his own breast! Even the ‘Biblical’ secret and sacred words fail to cover up the adding in of the ‘signs of the Zodiac’, a direct alliance with the powers of darkness and a demonstration of disobedience to
God’s Word, in Deuteronomy 18:10-12, where it is said that he who “useth Divination” (consulting the signs of the Zodiac to tell the future), “or is an observer of times” (which is an ancient description for Augury or Astrology – again dealing with the Zodiac) “is an abomination unto the Lord”!
Again, we see a mirror image of Biblical truth. The Priesthood power of Jesus is given to Satan, the god of Masonry.
WASHED IN THE BLOOD
In the seventeenth degree, or Knights of the East and West, having completed the initiation and after revealing the password (Jubulum) and the Sacred Word (Abaddon), “the Senior Warden conducts the Candidate to the elevated vacant canopy at the right of the All Puissant.”
“This is supposed to represent the end of the world when all good masons receive their reward by being conducted to a throne at the right hand of the All Puissant, having been purified by washing their robes in their own blood.”
In the lecture which follows, between the All Puissant and the Senior Warden, the Book with Seven Seals, which none but one can open (Rev 5:5) is twisted to represent “A Lodge or Council of Masons which the All Puissant alone has the right to convene and open.”
The Fourth Seal is represented by a skull or “Death’s Head” and we are told it “is the image of a brother who is excluded from a Lodge or Council” The fifth Seal is represented by a “Cloth Stained with Blood.” The All Puissant identifies this as a symbol “that we should not hesitate to spill ours for the good of masonry”. (Scottish Rite Masonry Illustrated, The complete Ritual, Vol. 1, Pages 453, 456, 457, E. Cook Publishing, 1974)
What a gross misrepresentation of the Holy Word of God! First and foremost, It is Christ and He alone who ‘hath prevailed to open the book and loose the seven seals thereof’. To presume that honor and power is to deny Christ, or yet in deeper perversity, to replace his power and authority with that of the All Puissant, even in the representation of the power to save and to enthrone. This is the very spirit of the AntiChrist!
Again, another clue to the true identity of the Masonic Deity is revealed in the ‘Sacred Word’ of this ritual, “Abaddon”. In Revelation 9:11, we learn that “they (the demons and workers from hell) had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is ABADDON!”
BLOOD OATHS
Throughout the initiation rituals of the “BLUE LODGES” and through all 33 degrees of Freemasonry, the candidates are sworn to secrecy by bloody oaths. Such as is the oath sworn by the Entered Apprentice or first degree: “…binding myself under no less penalty than that of having my throat cut across, my tongue torn out by its roots, and my body buried in the rough sands of the sea, at low-water mark”. The Master Mason swears, “..under no less penalty than that of having my body severed in two, my bowels taken from thence and burned to ashes, the ashes scattered before the four winds of heaven..”
It is in this final ‘Blue Lodge’ degree that that candidate is laid out ‘in death’ and is raised from the dead by the ‘Worshipful Master’ of the Lodge, using the secret grip of the Master Mason.
Let no Mason deceive you! We again face this replacement of our Saviour’s place by the power and authority of Lucifer. Paul said that if anyone should preach any other gospel ‘than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed’. (Gal 1:8, 9)
The simplicity of the Gospel is this, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also you have received, and wherein you stand; By which also you are saved, if you keep in memory what I have preached to you, unless you have believed in vain.
“For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” (1 Cor. 15:1-5)
The infinite power of Jesus was confirmed by Him when He said, “ALL power is given unto ME in heaven and in earth”. (Matt. 28:18) This power is His alone! “For if by one man’s offense death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ!” (Romans 5:17)
Jesus was the one who rose from the dead. Jesus is the one with the power to raise from the dead. Jesus is the one who frees us from the sting of death!
The Mason who would call himself Christian and allow himself to partake of a ritual resurrection by the power of Lucifer is no Christian. He is a Satanist. He stands, having been born again and raised from the dead as a Master Mason, through the power of the Masonic god, whom the God of Israel cast into the pit! He and his ‘saviour’ pass the sacred word, Mah-Hah-Bone. Next, in the ‘Five Points Of Fellowship, the new Master Mason solemnly vows “Breast to Breast: that you will ever keep in your breast a brother’s secrets, when communicated to you and received as such, murder and treason excepted.” (Duncan’s Rituals, Revised And Complete, E. Cook Publications, 1974, pages 35, 96, 120, 121)
It should further be noted that in the Royal Arch Degree, the candidate swears to protect the ‘brethren’, “Murder and treason not excepted”! This places the Masonic oath above that of our courts and our country. What hope would you have against a Mason in a Criminal or Civil Court with a Judge who is a 32nd or 33rd degree Mason? None, by the nature of their oaths!
COME OUT FROM AMONG THEM
IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST, AND HIS SHED BLOOD AT CALVARY, WE EXHORT YOU WHO CLAIM TO BE A MASON AND A CHRISTIAN.. “Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” (2 Cor. 6:17) He is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:11-12
“There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” 1 Tim 2:5
“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor. 3:10-11)
“God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil. 2:9-11)
“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?” (2 Cor. 6:14-15)
ONE OR THE OTHER
We are adamant that there is no other choice for you right now. If you are a Mason who professes to be a Christian, you are lying before the Holy God of Israel! Either renounce your Christian faith or renounce Masonry. One is from on high and the other is from the pit!
Every ‘Blue Lodge’ member who reads this can no longer maintain his defense of ignorance. Today, you stand revealed! Today, you must make your choice! Every Mason, through the highest degree, has had the mask of secrecy ripped away. You are without defense. Choose Jesus or choose Lucifer. Renounce Jesus if you must, but do not stand in the assembly of His saints and mock Him!
Unless you repent of this evil, your presence in the congregation of a Christian body is a grieving of the Holy Spirit. We pray that you will choose Jesus, and you will repent and be set free from this wicked power unto whom you have submitted your very soul! If this is your desire, remember that we have this promise,
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. (1 John 1:9)

The Church and Secret Societies
There are several secret societies in existence. Some are older than others and some are more prominent than others. The Church’s attitude to such organisations must be determined by a study of Scripture. From such a study we find that the teaching and practice of secret societies are in conflict with the Word of God in the following ways:-
1. Unscriptural Secrecy
The practice of secrecy is contrary to the teaching of the Word of God, and to the example of the Lord Jesus Christ. He said “I have spoken openly to the world, … I said nothing in secret.” Secrecy is also damaging to society and is contrary to its well-being. “Whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”
2. Unlawful Oaths
Membership in secret societies involves taking an oath before being aware of the obligation. No man is at liberty to bind his conscience by oath without a knowledge of the nature and extent of his undertaking. In doing so he is being bound to a law other than, and, in the light of further knowledge, possibly in conflict with, the revealed law of God. “There is only one Lawgiver and Judge”, “It is a trap for man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows”.
3. Unsocial Benevolence
The benevolence of secret societies is confined to a “brotherhood” which is not warranted by the Word of God. Scripture gives clear direction for our good works. “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
4. Unchristian Fellowship
True fellowship exists only between those who are united by saving faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. Freemasonry, for example, excludes the mediation of Christ and accepts, as brothers, representatives of many non-Christian religions. Scripture, however, clearly teaches that we can have fellowship with one another only because “our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.”
Two of the secret societies most in evidence in Ireland are Freemasonry and the Orange Order.
FREEMASONRY
There are additional reasons why membership in the Masonic Order brings a Christian into conflict with the teaching of Scripture.
1. Its Pseudo-Religious Structure
The symbols, rites and temples of Freemasonry are essentially religious in nature. Masonic writers have frequently claimed that their Craft is a religion. A leading masonic author, J.S.M. Ward, declares, “I boldly aver that Freemasonry is a religion, yet in no way conflicts with any other religion, unless that religion holds that no one outside its portals can be saved.” Further, Freemasonry claims to transcend all other religions and to include men of all faiths. Thus the masonic writer, A.G. Mackey, asserts, “The truth is that Masonry is undoubtedly a religious institution, its religion being that universal kind in which all men agree.” Such claims are a complete contradiction of the teaching of our Lord, who said, “No man cometh unto the Father but by Me.”
2. Its Antichristian Character
While paying lip-service to many Christian values, Masonry strikes at the heart of the Gospel when it claims that its rituals are fully sacramental and that salvation is by our own works. J.S.M. Ward boldy affirms “Freemasonry has taught that each man can, by himself, work out his own conception of God and thereby achieve salvation.” Another masonic writer, W.F. Hammond, says, “Masonry’s conception of immortality is something for which man must qualify while still in the flesh. Through fellowship of a moral discipline Masons are taught to qualify for the fellowship of eternal life.” Thus Masonry rejects salvation by grace through faith. Masonry worships a false god, teaches a false gospel and maintains a false brotherhood. It denies the teaching of Holy Scripture in its totality.
Some sincere Christians, failing to understand the true character of Freemasonry, are members of the Order. That in no way alters the fact that membership in the Masonic Order is inconsistent with Christianity.

GUIDANCE TO METHODISTS ON FREEMASONRY (1985)
GUIDANCE TO METHODISTS
ON FREEMASONRY (1985)
1. The Conference of 1984 directed the Faith and Order Committee to produce a
report on Freemasonry in order that the Methodist people might be guided as to
the advisability of membership.
2. After the Conference the United Grand Lodge of England, the controlling body
of Craft Freemasonry in England and Wales, approached the President and
offered to provide information to assist the Committee in its work. In
subsequent correspondence with the Convener of the Faith and Order
Committee, the Secretary of Grand Lodge suggested a meeting between the
Convener and a Freemason’s Lodge Chaplain. This offer was accepted in
November, 1984. At the same time, the Secretary was invited to offer
comments on the draft report when it was ready, particularly to correct any
errors of fact. Grand Lodge was also asked to arrange if possible a meeting with
a Methodist minister Freemason who carried the confidence of Grand Lodge.
No reply was received. A draft of this report was sent to Grand Lodge after the
January meeting of the Faith and Order Committee, and it was indicated that
meetings with a chaplain and a Methodist minister Freemason were still wanted.
In February 1985 the Secretary of Grand Lodge replied with detailed comments
on the draft report. He supplied the name of a Methodist minister Freemason
who also commented on the draft. The same minister was present at a meeting
between two members of the Committee and Provincial masonic officers, which
was also attended by an Anglican clergyman mason. Comments on the draft
report were also received from a former Vice-President of the Conference who
is a Freemason.
3. The Committee gratefully acknowledges the help it has received from
Methodists and non-Methodists, Freemasons and non-Freemasons. It has
received many documents, including copies of reports on Freemasonry by other
churches, and has benefited from the presence of an observer from the United
Reformed Church. Among the documents made available to the Committee is a
copy of a leaflet entitled ‘What is Freemasonry’, published by the United Grand
Lodge for Freemasons. Quotations in this report are from that leaflet.
4. Freemasonry describes itself as ‘one of the world’s oldest secular fraternal
societies’ and claims to be ‘concerned with moral and spiritual values’. In basic,
or Craft, Freemasonry there are three levels of membership, known as degrees,
through which the member may progress. Almost all members progress through
all three degrees. On reaching the third degree, the highest of the three, masons
may be invited to take up other forms of Freemasonry. One of these, known as
the Holy Royal Arch, is described as the completion of the third degree, though
many Freemasons do not take it up. The other forms of Freemasonry draw their
members from Craft Freemasonry, but have their own governing bodies distinct
from the United Grand Lodge. Some of the other forms of Freemasonry are
specifically Christian in intention. Most Freemasons know little about forms
other than Craft Freemasonry.
493
5. Membership of the society ‘is open to men of any race or religion’ who have ‘a
belief in a Supreme Being’ and ‘are of good repute’. (Organisations of women
Freemasons exist, but are not recognised by Grand Lodge and are not considered
in this report). Each mason is a member of a Lodge and is expected to attend its
meetings. Part of the business of a Lodge is the teaching of the precepts of
Freemasonry through ritual dramas, which include an initiation rite for the first
degree and rites of passage between degrees. Underlying all the rites is a legend
loosely connected with the Biblical story of the building of King Solomon’s
Temple.
The rituals of Freemasonry were originally passed on orally, and although
printed versions are now available, there are differences of detail from place to
place. In preparing this report we have used printed copies of the most widely
used versions of the rituals of Craft and Royal Arch Freemasonry. These are
found in two books, listed in the Appendix; copies of the books were bought
openly by a non-mason at a shop specialising in masonic regalia. The printed
rituals contain many instances of words replaced by their initial letters or by
abbreviations, for example ‘light’ appears as 1 and ‘obligation’ as obl; other
words are omitted and replaced by rows of dots. Many of the hidden words are
numbered among the secrets of Freemasonry which masons are sworn to
conceal, and are supplied in Freemasonry by oral tradition. We have made use
of the full versions of the rituals published by Walton Hannah in the books listed
in the Appendix. The accuracy of Mr Hannah’s versions has never been
challenged, and has been publicly attested by some Freemasons.
6. Freemasonry claims to follow three great principles: brotherly love, including
tolerance and respect for the opinions of others; relief, including the practice of
charity to the community as a whole; and truth, including striving for high moral
standards. It is beyond question that the society encourages high moral
standards, and that masonic charitable giving is generous and includes masonic
and non-masonic charities.
7. Among the demands made of the mason is ‘a respect for the laws of the country
in which a man works and lives’. The mason’s ‘duty as a citizen must always
prevail over any obligation to other Freemasons’. Similarly, ‘The use by a
Freemason of his membership to promote his own or anyone else’s business,
professional or personal interests is condemned, and is contrary to the conditions
on which he seeks admission to Freemasonry’.
8. Despite these official statements, some Freemasons feel obliged to promote the
interests of other Freemasons, other things being equal, as part of the duty of
brotherly love. It is frequently alleged that this practice leads to unfair treatment
of non-masons, and for some such allegations we have been offered evidence
which in the nature of the case cannot be tested. Christians will not be surprised
to find that some men fail to live up to the high standards demanded of them, but
abuse of membership by some is not peculiar to Freemasonry, and the society
cannot be condemned because of the conduct of some of its members.
9. Freemasonry is condemned by some on the grounds that it is discriminatory.
Membership is restricted to men, who must be of good repute, and has financial
implications which cannot be met by all. Other forms of discrimination are
alleged, for example discrimination against the handicapped. Only the
494
restrictions mentioned above are found in the society’s constitution and
regulations, and we have been given evidence of Lodges which include
handicapped members and men of different races and religions.
10. It is natural that those who meet together in a fraternal society will discuss
matters of mutual interest. It has been alleged that some church business,
including that relating to the stationing of ministers, has been discussed and
decided informally at Lodge meetings. Such practices, if they occur, are to be
condemned. The business of the church must be done in the duly elected
committees of the church, by those involved, and should not be settled, however
informally, anywhere else.
11. Suspicions about Freemasonry are encouraged by the excessive secrecy
practised by the society. While officially the secrecy applies only to the
recognition signs of the society, and so may appear reasonable, in practice it is
applied to most aspects of the society, including avowal of membership. The
secret signs enable masons to recognise one another instantly and secretly but it
is difficult for non-masons to discover whether or not someone is a Freemason.
There are no public lists of Freemasons or Lodges. The society thus encourages
suspicion and lays itself open to charges of corrupt practice which can be neither
proved nor disproved.
12. For Christians the secrecy practised by Freemasons poses a problem in that
secrecy of any kind is destructive of fellowship. The Christian community is an open fellowship. Within it there will inevitably be some secrecy, for example pastoral confidentiality, which is entirely proper; but secrecy should be kept to the minimum necessary, and must be capable of careful and public justification.
Freemasonry does not publicly justify its secrecy, and it is hard to see what reasonable justification might be offered, particularly of secrecy with respect to
membership.
13. The Secrecy of Freemasonry is protected by the oaths sworn by members at different stages. These oaths are of an extravagant nature and include bloodcurdling penalties for those who break their oaths. For some Christians the swearing of any oath is forbidden. For most, swearing an oath in, for example, a court of law is acceptable. However the masonic oaths are so extravagant that they cannot be taken at face value, as most masons agree. Freemasons admit that the penalties have never been inflicted, and most agree that they never could be inflicted. It is claimed that the true penalty of breaking one’s oath is that of being known as a wilfully perjured individual, and the oath in the first degree
refers to this penalty. A so-called ‘permissive’ alternative form of the oath was approved by Grand Lodge in 1964 in response to masonic concern about the
oaths; in it the candidate swears only to bear in mind the traditional penalties.
The permissive form has not been widely adopted, and most masons still swear the traditional oaths including the traditional penalties ‘without evasion, equivocation, or mental reservation of any kind’ (words from the rituals, quoted in many places). The swearing of such oaths thus devalues the use of oaths or solemn words.
Methodists might look to the Covenant service for an example of the proper use of solemn words. Certainly oaths should never contain extravagant words just to add colour, nor should they refer to penalties which cannot be enforced.
495
14. A further problem with the oaths of Freemasonry, and with much of the ritual of
the society, is that the candidate at any stage is not supposed to know in advance
the full content of the ritual to be followed or the oath he will be required to
swear. While the candidate will doubtless trust those whom he knows who have
been through the ritual before him, entry into rituals and obligations whose
content is unknown and whose implications are shrouded in secrecy as far as the
candidate is concerned cannot be commended as a course of action for
Christians.
15. Freemasons are bound by their oaths to an allegiance to one another. Some
critics claim that this allegiance takes precedence over all other commitments.
Freemasonry explicitly denies the claim: ‘a Freemason is encouraged to do his
duty first to his God’. Christians recognise an allegiance to God in Christ which
takes precedence over all other commitments, and there are commitments to family, society, church, and so on which are of great importance. As with all commitments, priorities must be weighed carefully: if membership of Freemasonry takes precedence over Christian commitments, such membership is unacceptable to Methodists.
16. Freemasons are required to believe in a Supreme Being, sometimes called the Great Architect of the Universe. At various points in masonic rituals prayer is offered to this Being. Freemasonry claims to draw together those of different religions and Freemasons are required to respect one another’s religious beliefs, and this is reflected in the prayers offered. However, the worship included in masonic ritual seems to be an attenuated form unsatisfactory in any religious tradition. Christians must be concerned that the Supreme Being is not equated by all with God as Christians acknowledge Him, and prayer in craft and Royal Arch Freemasonry is never offered in the name of Jesus Christ. There are documented cases of masonic services in Christian churches in which Christian prayers have been altered to remove the name of Christ.
17. Another difficulty about Freemasonry for Christians is the allegation that
masonic practices imply salvation by works, through charitable giving and
mutual aid. Again, while these elements of Freemasonry can become dominant
for an individual, the masonic rituals do not contain any such doctrine.
18. The case is rather different with the fear that Freemasonry offers salvation by
secret knowledge. The suggestion of secret knowledge becomes stronger as one
proceeds through the degrees of the society, and becomes explicit in the
exaltation rites for the Royal Arch degree. The rites here include a dramatic
enactment of the re-discovery of secrets claimed to have been lost. The
references to these secrets carry clear implications of a secret knowledge whose
possession helps one to obtain immortal life, but there is no explicit reference to
salvation and no claim that this is the only way to immortality. Christians
believe that the knowledge of the sure way to salvation which includes eternal
life, should be freely available to all and must be offered to all.
19. The rites of Freemasonry raise further questions for Christians and the questions
are made more difficult by the different interpretations of the rituals offered by
Freemasons themselves. Freemasonry concerns itself with spiritual values and
many masons regard their progress in the society as a spiritual journey marked
by the various rites. In the rite of initiation for the first degree the candidate is
496
blindfolded, and is required to ask for the restoration of light. The explicit
reference is to material light, but the context of the ritual, and the accompanying
charge to the candidate suggest strongly a spiritual passage from darkness to
light as well. During the exaltation ceremony for the Royal Arch, the candidate
is blindfolded and required to ask for light; this time there is no reference to
material light and the candidate is congratulated on being admitted to the light of
the Order. The rite of raising to the third degree includes the symbolic death of
the candidate and a raising from this figurative death by ritual means. In
Christianity the symbolic rite of passing from death to life is the rite of baptism
in the name of Father, Son and Spirit; and the passage from darkness to light is
through faith in Jesus Christ. Freemasonry thus provides ceremonies which on
some masonic interpretations are equivalent to essential parts of Christian
practice and offer alternatives to important elements of Christian faith.
20. The most serious theological objection to Freemasonry for Christians lies in the
name given to the Supreme Being in the rituals of the Royal Arch degree. One
of the secrets revealed in this degree is that the name of the Supreme Being is
JAHBULON. It has been suggested to us that this word is a description of God,
but the ritual refers to the word as a name of God. The name is a composite, as
the ritual explicitly states. The explanation given of the name in the ritual is
acknowledged to be inaccurate, but is preserved to bring out the traditional
meaning for Freemasonry of the word. The best explanation of the derivation of
this word seems to be that two of the three parts, JAH and BUL, are the names
of gods in different religions, while the third syllable ON was thought by the
composers of the ritual to be the name of a god in yet another religion; modern
scholarship suggests they were wrong. In any case, it is clear that each of the
three syllables is intended to be the name of a divinity in a particular religion.
The whole word is thus an example of syncretism, an attempt to unite different
religions in one, which Christians cannot accept. We note that some Christians
who are Freemasons withdraw from any ceremonies in which this word is to be
used.
21. Our study has shown that many of the complaints directed against Freemasonry
can be directed against other societies, and arise from abuses which the society
itself condemns, but which are compounded by its own secrecy. Nevertheless
on the most generous reading of the evidence there remain serious questions for
Christians about Freemasonry, especially theological questions relating to
syncretism and the replacement of Christian essentials. Although Freemasonry
claims not to be a religion or a religious movement, its rituals contain religious
practices and carry religious overtones. It is clear that Freemasonry may
compete strongly with Christianity. There is a great danger that the Christian
who becomes a Freemason will find himself compromising his Christian beliefs
or his allegiance to Christ, perhaps without realising what he is doing.
22. Consequently our guidance to the Methodist people is that Methodists should
not become Freemasons.
23. We recognise that there are many loyal and sincere Methodists who are
Freemasons, whose commitment to Christ is unquestionable and who see no
incompatibility in their membership of the Methodist Church and of
Freemasonry. We urge all Methodists who are already Freemasons to study this
report and consider carefully the questions raised here. We recommend that
497
Methodists who think it right to remain Freemasons, might consider whether they should, on appropriate occasions, declare their membership in order to remove suspicion and mistrust.

Report of the Committee on Secret Societies ( Presbyterian Church)
– Presented to the Ninth (1942) General Assembly of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church
General Assembly reports are thoughtful and weighty treatises on important matters but they are not constitutional documents. Only the Confession of Faith and Catechisms, the Form of Government, the Book of Discipline, and the Directory for the Public Worship of God of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church express the church’s official understanding of what the Word of God teaches.

The Report
Action by the Ninth (1942) General Assembly concerning the Report
The Report
Introduction
At the ninth General Assembly of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, meeting at Rochester, New York, June 2-5, 1942, the Committee on Secret Societies presented its report. The Assembly instructed the Committee to send this report to the ministers and sessions of the Church for their study. The report deals with a matter of such timely importance that the Committee on Christian Education has decided to publish it in its series of “Tracts for Today.”
The Committee which drew up the report consisted of R. B. Kuiper, Chairman, Oscar Holkeboer, Arthur O. Olson, Robert A. Wallace, and Paul Woolley. The report is printed exactly as it appeared in the minutes of the ninth General Assembly, except that two introductory paragraphs have been omitted. The Committee on Christian Education is responsible for the title.
I. Preliminary Considerations
1. Masonry and Other Secret Organizations
The mandate given this committee speaks of oath-bound secret societies in general. The committee frankly admits that it has not attempted a detailed investigation of all such societies. To accomplish that would have required even more time than was devoted to the preparation of this report, and much more time than the members of the committee had at their disposal. It may also be doubted whether so comprehensive an investigation is necessary. In the main the committee has restricted its study to that society which is known as the Ancient Order of Free and Accepted Masons. It should be borne in mind that Freemasonry, which is the oldest of the larger secret orders in this country, is generally admitted also to be their mother. Such popular orders as the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Knights of Pythias, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Independent Order of Odd-Fellows, the Improved Order of Red Men, the Woodmen of the World and the Order of the Eastern Star are all of them in many ways similar to their earlier prototype, the Masonic order. Their rituals, secrets, terms of membership, objects and purposes have in varying degree characteristics like those of Masonry. It follows that, if the objections which have been taken to Masonry are well taken, then these same objections apply also in the main to the other orders mentioned and to whatever smaller orders of similar character may exist.
2. Is Reliable Information Available?
An objection frequently raised to any study of secret orders by non-members takes the form of the statement: You cannot get any reliable information. It may be said categorically that, in the case of the major orders, particularly the Order of Free and Accepted Masons, this statement is not correct. Reliable information concerning all points of major importance, and concerning many others that are not important, is accessible to any who will make a proper study of the matter.
The so-called secrets of Masonry constitute only a portion of the total activity of the order. The general ideals of Masonry and the history and philosophy of the order have been developed by numerous Masonic and non-Masonic writers in books designed for the general public as well as for Masons. Of course, even Masonic writers do not always agree fully with one another about these matters, but that is true of any field of research. On the whole the agreement among them is striking.
Much of the Masonic ritual is of a non-secret character, and handbooks concerning speeches, statements, prayers and similar matters are published without secrecy. A great mass of useful information concerning the relationship of the order to Christianity is available from volumes of this character.
Further, the so-called ceremonies, grips, passwords and such matters are very largely available through printings by recognized Masonic publishing houses in cipher code. These cipher codes, at least some of them, are not difficult to read. They can be used as original sources of information, and also as checks by which to determine the accuracy of the plain English rituals which have been published by non-Masonic sources. Among the texts and descriptions published by such sources are those emanating from individuals who, for one reason or another, have demitted their membership in the Masonic order. When their evidence agrees with that from Masonic sources something of a check in both directions is provided. This committee has had the privilege of personally interviewing and questioning a former member of the Masonic order who was anxious to provide as much information as desired about the body.
It is worth noting that a Mason, Eugen Lennhoff, who has written one of the most comprehensive and well-balanced books about Masonry, admits that the signs, words and grips, and copies of the Ritual and explanations of the symbols, are obtainable by anyone (The Freemasons, p, 18). And in his Introduction to Free Masonry, Carl H. Claudy, also a Mason, says: “There is no obligation of secrecy regarding the truths taught by Freemasonry, otherwise such a book as this could not lawfully be written” (vol. I, p. 34).
Masonic libraries containing books by Masons of high degree and excellent standing are open to the public. One of these is the Scottish Rite Library of Chicago. Masonic literature may be purchased of the Macoy Publishing and Masonic Supply Company of New York City.
For further information on these particular matters the following books, among others, may be consulted:
Eugen Lennhoff: The Freemasons. Translated by Einar Frame. London, Methuen, 1934.
Theodore Graebner: A Treatise on Freemasonry. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1914.
Theodore Graebner: The Secret Empire. St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1927.
3. Criticisms That Do Not Seem Weighty
Certain criticisms are sometimes offered with relation to secret orders which do not seem to this committee to be of such weight as to constitute valid reasons for objection.
One of these is the objection to secrecy as such. Obviously, there is nothing wrong in secrecy at the proper time and place. Every family has its secrets. Without secrecy in their preparation, academic examinations could hardly be conducted in our institutions of learning. The pastors and sessions of our churches often deal with personal matters which are much better not divulged to the congregation. Our Lord Himself occasionally commanded His disciples not to reveal to all men things which He told them privately. To be sure, in certain circumstances secrecy is sinful, but it may not be said that secrecy is evil in every instance.
Another objection in the minds of some is to the taking of any oaths whatsoever. Whether or not the oaths required of Masons are reprehensible will be considered at another point in this report. Just now the committee contends merely that the taking of an oath is not to be condemned under any and all circumstances. The Westminster Confession of Faith states that “a lawful oath, being imposed by lawful authority, in such matters, ought to be taken” (XXII, 2).
Still another objection sometimes brought against Masonry concerns the alleged frivolous character of the symbols, garbs and ritualistic articles used. In particular instances criticism of such matters may be and, as will be pointed out later on, actually is well grounded. But a sweeping charge of frivolity should, in the opinion of this committee, be avoided. The actual meaning, significance and value of symbols, as measured in terms of emotional power, are difficult for a non-participant correctly to gauge. What seems frivolous to an outsider may in actuality not be so at all to the initiate.
Fault has been found with Masonry for barring from membership women, negroes and the physically deformed. The worst that can be said about this provision is that it belies Masonry’s boast of universalism. There does indeed seem to be an inconsistency here. But, apart from that, care should be taken not to stress this objection out of measure. Prominent Masons have founded the Order of the Eastern Star for women. The fact that some lodges offer certain insurance benefits to members may be one reason among others for restricting membership to reasonably “good risks.” And it surely cannot be said that every organization is in duty bound to open its doors to men of any and every race.
There are those who interpret “the separated life” so as to rule out the membership of believers together with unbelievers in any organization whatever. They customarily quote 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 to substantiate this view. But that is a serious error. The passage of Scripture just cited condemns the fellowship of Christians and pagans specifically in the matter of religion and worship. To assert that believers may not hold membership with unbelievers in a book club or an automobile club, for instance, savors strongly of Anabaptistic separatism. The apostle Paul took pains to tell members of the Corinthian church that he did not mean that they should have no company with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or idolaters, for then they would needs have to go out of the world (1 Corinthians 5:9). Therefore, to condemn membership of a Christian in the Masonic order on the sole ground that this order contains unbelievers, in unwarranted.
II. The Religion of Masonry
1. The Issue Stated
The foregoing paragraph has named the point on which this investigation must be centered. Is Masonry a religious order, or is it not? That is the crucial question. If it should prove that the answer to this question must be affirmative, then the further question, no less crucial than the first, will arise, what the religion of Masonry is. If it is Christianity, well and good. If it is anything but Christianity, the religion of Masonry is necessarily false, for it is axiomatic that Christianity is the only true religion. And in that case no Christian may have communion with Masonry.
2. Is Masonry a Religion?
On this score the evidence is overwhelming. There is no room for any reasonable doubt as to Masonry’s being a religion. Not only do the symbols, rites and temples of this order point unmistakably to it as a religion, but a great many Masonic authors of note emphatically declare it to be just that. Of almost numberless quotations that could be given here the committee has selected a few.
J. S. M. Ward, the author of several standard Masonic works, defines religion as “a system of teaching moral truth associated with a belief in God” and then declares: “I consider Freemasonry is a sufficiently organized school of mysticism to be entitled to be called a religion.” He goes on to say: “I boldly aver that Freemasonry is a religion, yet in no way conflicts with any other religion, unless that religion holds that no one outside its portals can be saved” (Freemasonry: Its Aims and Ideals, pp. 182, 185, 187).
T. S. Webb says in his Masonic Monitor: “The meeting of a Masonic Lodge is strictly a religious ceremony. The religious tenets of Masonry are few, simple, but fundamental. No lodge or Masonic assembly can be regularly opened or closed without prayer” (p. 284).
Albert G. Mackey, General High Priest of the General Grand Chapter of the United States, and the author of numerous works on Masonry, has this to say: “Freemasonry is emphatically a religious institution; it teaches the existence of God. It points to the celestial canopy above where is the Eternal Lodge and where He presides. It instructs us in the way to reach the portals of that distant temple” (The Mystic Tie, p. 32). And in his Lexicon of Freemasonry the same celebrated authority asserts: “The religion, then, of Masonry is pure Theism” (p. 404).
Extremely significant is the testimony of Joseph Fort Newton, a zealous advocate of Masonic principles. He deplores the fact that within the lodge there are many who regard it as “a mere social order inculcating ethical ideals and practicing philanthropy.” He continues: “As some of us prefer to put it, Masonry is not a religion but Religion—not a church but a worship, in which men of all religions may unite” (The Religion of Masonry, pp. 10, 11). With this agrees A. G. Mackey’s declaration: “The truth is that Masonry is undoubtedly a religious institution, its religion being of that universal kind in which all men agree” (Textbook of Masonic Jurisdiction, p. 95).
To be sure, H. L. Haywood says that “there is no such thing as a Masonic philosophy, just as there is no such thing as a Masonic religion” (The Great Teachings of Masonry, p. 18). But on careful analysis it becomes clear that he means that Masonry is not to be put in a class with other religions; in a word, that it is a super-religion. For he asserts that Masonry has a religious foundation all its own and that its religion is universal (Idem, p. 99). No doubt, Haywood would agree with Newton that “Masonry is not a religion, but Religion.”
Such is the unmistakable testimony, not of critics of Masonry, but of Masonic authors who are recognized by Masonry itself as authorities.
3. The Religion of Masonry Evaluated
In seeking to evaluate the religion of Masonry our standard must be Christianity, the one true religion. That Masonry cannot be simply non-Christian is self-evident. Neutrality with reference to Christianity is an obvious impossibility. Either Masonry as a religion is in agreement with Christianity, or it must be at odds with Christianity. Either it is Christian, or it must be anti-Christian. A comparison on several important points of the religious teaching of Masonry with that of Christianity should reveal which of these two possibilities in the abstract is concrete reality.
a. The Origin of Masonic Religion
Christianity is based squarely upon God’s supernatural revelation in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. Many Masonic authorities take pains to deny that Masonry is based upon the Bible. A. G. Mackey’s Encyclopedia of Freemasonry informs us that in Masonry the Bible is regarded only as a symbol of the will of God and is on a par with the sacred books of other religions (p. 104). And in speaking of the Blue Lodge, which is the foundation of all Masonry, both the York Rite and the Scottish Rite, Chase’s Digest of Masonic Law declares: “Blue Lodge Masonry has nothing whatever to do with the Bible; if it did, it would not be Masonry, it would be something else” (p. 207).
Many authorities maintain that Masonry is rooted in ancient paganism. For example, J. S. M. Ward, who after fourteen years of research wrote his greatest book, Freemasonry and the Ancient Gods, traces the religious tenets of Masonry back to the religions of India and ancient Mexico and the mysteries of pagan Egypt and Rome (for example, p. 341). And A. T. C. Pierson, another celebrated interpreter of Masonry, says in his Traditions, Origin and Early History of Freemasonry that Masonic religion comes from the Orient and has reference to primitive religion, whose first occupation was the worship of the sun (p. 34). Several Masonic authors put forth the claim that Masonry represents the oldest religious system in the world and constitutes the common basis on which all the religious systems of history were founded.
Whatever one may think of Masonry’s claims to antiquity, it is clear that James Putt, a critic of Masonry, states the case well when he concludes as to the origin of Masonry: “This, then, is the situation. Masonry claims to be the essence of all religions. It guards the most ancient esoteric worship. It aims at a universal religion on the basis of the religious aspirations of man. It is naturalistic and evolutionistic rather than supernaturalistic and revelationary” (Masonry, p. 24).
b. The God of Masonry
The God of Christianity is the God of the Bible, the Holy Trinity. Is He also the God of Masonry, or is Masonry’s God another? Recognized Masonic authorities themselves supply the answer.
Says T. S. Webb in his Masonic Monitor: “So broad is the religion of Masonry, and so carefully are all sectarian tenets excluded from the system, that the Christian, the Jew, and the Mohammedan, in all their numberless sects and divisions, may and do harmoniously combine in its moral and intellectual work, with the Buddhist, the Parsee, the Confucian, and the worshiper of Deity under every form” (p. 285). This amounts to saying that the God of Masonry is that Deity which is worshiped by the adherents of all religions alike. That the Christian conception of God differs essentially from all other conceptions of God and that the God of the Bible is God alone—these truths are ignored and by necessary implication denied.
In perfect harmony with Webb’s teaching concerning the God of Masonry is J. S. M. Ward’s statement: “Freemasonry has taught each man can, by himself work out his own conception of God and thereby achieve salvation” (Freemasonry: Its Aims and Ideals, p. 187). But Christianity maintains that only the God who has revealed Himself in the Bible is truly God and that all other Gods, products as they are of human speculation, are idols.
The divine transcendence is boldly denied by J. F. Newton. After lauding as the three great rituals of the human race the Prajapati ritual of ancient Hinduism, the Mass of the Christian Church and the Third Degree of Masonry, he says: “These testify to the profoundest insight of the human soul that God becomes man and that man may become God” (The Religion of Masonry, p. 37).
In a pamphlet entitled The Relation of the Liberal Churches and the Fraternal Orders, and published by the American Unitarian Association, E. A. Coil, minister of the First Unitarian Society of Marietta, Ohio, and one-time Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge of that city, pleads for closer cooperation between the liberal churches and the fraternal orders. He bases his plea on the contention that both have essentially the same conception of God. Both, he holds, believe in the universal fatherhood of God (p. 9). With this agrees J. F. Newton’s assertion: “The basis of our Temple of Fraternity rests back upon the reality of the Divine Fatherhood” (The Religion of Masonry, p. 116). Needless to say, the universal Father of all mankind is not the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ and of those who through faith in Him have received the right to be called the sons of God (John 1:12).
c. Masonry and the Word of God
As was already shown, Masonry disclaims being founded upon the Bible. Says A. G. Mackey: “Within a few years an attempt has been made by some Grand Lodges to add to these simple moral and religious qualifications another, which requires a belief in the divine authenticity of the Scriptures. It is much to be regretted that Masons will sometimes forget the fundamental law of their institution, and endeavor to add or detract from the perfect integrity of the building as it was left them by their predecessors. Whenever this is done, the beauty of our temple must suffer. Thus, in the instance here referred to, the fundamental law of Masonry requires only a belief in the Supreme Architect of the universe, and in a future life, while it says with peculiar toleration, that in all matters of religious belief Masons are only expected to be of that religion in which all men agree. Under the shelter of this wise provision, the Christian and the Jews, the Mohammedan and the Brahmin are permitted to unite around a common altar, and Masonry becomes in practice, as well as in theory, universal” (Text-book of Masonic Jurisprudence, pp. 94, 95).
It is significant, however that in Masonic ritual in use in so-called Christian lands, as Great Britain and the United States, quotations from Holy Scripture abound. It cannot be doubted that this fact has blinded the eyes of many to the real character of the Masonic order. And yet, no keen discernment is required to penetrate this thin veil of seeming Christianity. Regarding itself as the essence of all religions, Masonry has no difficulty adapting itself to the prevailing religion of any land. Therefore, in a historically Christian country like America it employs the Bible in its ritual and by the same token it employs the Koran in Moslem countries. As a matter of fact, eminent Masons, such as A. G. Mackey, openly avow that for them the Bible and the sacred books of other religions are all in a class (Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, p. 104).
Frequently in Masonic ritual the inspired Word of God is seriously mutilated, and in many instances this mutilation consists in the omission of the name of Jesus Christ. In Mackey’s Masonic Ritualist the name of Christ is omitted from 1 Peter 2:5 (p. 271), 2 Thessalonians 3:6 (p. 348), and 2 Thessalonians 3:12 (p. 349). With reference to the elision of the Saviour’s name from 1 Peter 2:5 the following explanation is offered: “The passages are taken, with slight but necessary modifications from the First Epistle of Peter” (p. 272). The reason for this modification is obvious. Masonry does not claim to be Christian but, on the contrary, purports to be the essence of all religions; therefore, its ritual has no place for distinctly Christian material. That the omission of the Name which is above every name is described as a slight but necessary modification speaks volumes.
In view of the foregoing it is to be expected that the name of Christ would be omitted also from the prayers offered in the lodge. As a matter of fact W. P. Loveless, a former Masonic chaplain who seceded, has this to say: “As Chaplain in the Masonic Lodge I offered the prayers of the Lodge and heard many others offered, but never one in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. His name is excluded” (The Christian and Secret Societies, p. 14).
Time and again in Masonic ritual portions of the Word of God are erroneously—and, it must be said, even blasphemously—applied. One striking instance may be cited. On page 286 of Mackey’s Masonic Ritualist is found an etching of the Masonic keystone. Above it and alongside of it one reads: “The following passages of Scriptures are here appropriately introduced:—’This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head stone of the corner.’—Acts iv. 11 ‘To him that overcometh, will I give to eat of the hidden manna; and I will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth, saving he that receiveth it.’—Rev. ii. 17.”
The same blasphemous use of the Holy Scripture appears in the following quotation from J. S. M. Ward’s Freemasonry and the Ancient Gods: “Light is the key which opens the door to our mysteries, and it is the same Light which ‘shines in every letter of the Koran,’ and is the Light of Mithra, who is the light of Ahura-Mazda. It is the same Light from which Moses shaded his eyes when it appeared to him in the bush, and the sign of a R(oyal) A(rch) is still made by an Arunta native of Australia when he returns from the final degree through which he passes in the mysterious ceremonies peculiar to that primitive people. It is that Light of which it is written in our Scriptures that ‘the Light shineth in the Darkness and the Darkness comprehended it not’ ” (pp. 61, 62).
It is no exaggeration to assert that Masonry does most serious violence to the inscripturated Word of God and does the gravest despite to Jesus Christ, the personal Word.
d. The Ethics of Masonry
In his Text-book of Masonic Jurisprudence A. G. Mackey is careful to explain that the moral law of Masonry is not the moral law of the Bible. We read: “Every Mason is obliged by his tenure to obey moral law. Now this moral law is not to be considered as confined to the decalogue of Moses, within which narrow limits the ecclesiastical writers technically retain it, but rather as alluding to what is called the lex naturae or the law of nature. This is the moral law to which the old charge already cited refers, and which it declares to be the law of Masonry. And this was wisely done, for it is evident that no law less universal could have been appropriately selected for the government of an institution whose prominent characteristic is its universality. The precepts of Jesus could not have been made obligatory upon a Jew; a Christian would have denied the sanctions of the Koran; a Mohammedan must have rejected the law of Moses, and a disciple of Zoroaster would have turned from all to the teachings of his Zend Avesta. The universal law of nature, which the authors of the ‘Old Charges’ have properly called the moral law, is, therefore, the only law suited in every respect to be adopted as the Masonic code” (p. 502).
H. L. Haywood in his Great Teachings of Masonry places Masonic ethics on an experiential, humanistic and utilitarian basis. Says this teacher of Masonry: “Human experience, both individual and racial, is the one final authority in morals. Wrong is whatever hurts human life or destroys human happiness. Acts are not right or wrong intrinsically but according as their effects are hurtful or helpful” (p. 39). More blatant disregard of the law of God is hardly imaginable.
In this connection reference must be made to Masonic oaths. According to Theodore Graebner’s A Treatise on Freemasonry (pp. 22, 23), the following is an example of the very first oath required in Masonry, that for a candidate being initiated as an Entered Apprentice Mason:
“I, ____________, of my own free will and accord, in the presence of Almighty God and his Worshipful Lodge, erected to Him and dedicated to the Holy Saint John, do hereby and hereon most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear that I will always hail, ever conceal, and never reveal any of the secret arts, parts, or points of the hidden mysteries of Ancient Freemasonry, which have been heretofore, may at this time, or shall at any future period be communicated to me as such, to any person or persons whomsoever, except it be to a true and lawful brother Mason, or within a regularly constituted Lodge of Masons, and neither unto him nor them, until by strict trial, due examination, or legal information I shall have found him or them as lawfully entitled to the same as I am myself.
“I furthermore promise and swear that I will not write, print, paint, stamp, stain, cut, carve, make, nor engrave them, nor cause the same to be done upon anything movable or immovable, capable of receiving the least impression of a word, syllable, letter, or character, whereby the same may become legible or intelligible to any person under the canopy of heaven, and the secrets of Freemasonry be thereby unlawfully obtained through my unworthiness.
“To all of this I most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear, with a firm and steadfast resolution to keep and perform the same without any equivocation, mental reservation, or secret evasion of mind whatever, binding myself under no less a penalty than that of having my throat cut across, my tongue torn out by its roots and buried in the rough sands of the sea at low water mark, where the tide ebbs and flows twice in twenty-four hours, should I ever knowingly or willingly violate this my solemn oath or obligation as an Entered Apprentice Mason. So help me God, and keep me steadfast in the due performance of the same.”
From the viewpoint of Christian ethics this oath is open to serious criticism on more than one score. The Christian, bound as he is to maintain justice and equity before God and man to the best of his powers, has no right to pledge himself in advance to keep secret something the bearing of which on questions of justice and morals he cannot know. And, aside from the question whether an oath is not too solemn a transaction for a ceremony of such doubtful importance as reception into a mere human organization, it must be said without hesitation that the violence of this oath is plainly contrary to our Lord’s principles of speech as set forth in Matthew 5:34-37.
According to the cipher ritual a Master Mason takes the solemn pledge “that I will not have illicit carnal intercourse with a brother’s wife, his mother, sister or daughter, I knowing them to be such.” In the opinion of the committee some critics of Masonry are too severe in their denunciation of this pledge. For example, it has been said evidently to leave “no closed season” for other women and to protect even a Masonic brother’s women relatives only when they are known to be such. That seems to be an exaggeration. A promise to abstain from illicit intercourse with some women does not necessarily imply a reservation of liberty to engage in such intercourse with other women. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that this pledge does introduce a distinction which is not only foreign to Christian ethics, but even contrary to it. Christianity demands that a man respect the chastity, not merely of certain women, but of all alike.
e. Salvation According to Masonry
Every religion has a doctrine of salvation, and to that rule Masonry is no exception. Is the Masonic teaching on this important subject in harmony with the teaching of Holy Writ, or are the two at variance with each other? The answer to that question may well be unequivocal.
Christianity claims to be the only true religion and to set forth the one and only way of salvation. Christ Himself declared: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). “In none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). But Masonry teaches that there is salvation in other religions as well. W. L. Wilmhurst, Grand Registrar of West Yorkshire District, says: “Our science in its universality limits our conception to no one exemplar. Take the nearest and most familiar to you, the one under whose aegis you were racially born and who therefore may serve you best; for each is able to bring you to the center, though each may have his separate method. To the Jewish brother it says: ‘Take the father of the faithful, and realize what being gathered to his bosom means.’ To the Christian brother, it points to him upon whose breast lay the beloved disciple. To the Hindoo brother it points to Krishna, etc. To the Buddhist it points to the Maitreja of universal compassion. And to the Moslem, it points to his Prophet, and to the significance of being clothed in his mantle” (The Masonic Initiation, p. 105). According to the July 10, 1940, issue of The Covenanter Witness, J. S. M. Ward has attempted to express the same thought in verse:
“Bacchus died and rose again,
On the golden Syrian Plain;
Osiris rose from out his grave,
And thereby mankind did save;
Adonis likewise did shed his blood
By the yellow Syrian flood;
Zoroaster brought to birth
Mirthra from his cave of earth.
And we today in Christian lands
We with them can join hands.”
The Christian doctrine of salvation is heterosoteric; it teaches that man must be saved by another. Masonry’s doctrine of salvation, on the other hand, is autosoteric; it teaches that man must and can save himself. “Freemasonry,” we are told by J. S. M. Ward, “has taught that each man can, by himself, work out his own conception of God and thereby achieve salvation” (Freemasonry: Its Aims and Ideals, p. 187). And in his book, What Masonry Means, which is warmly recommended in an introduction by J. F. Newton, William F. Hammond says: “Masonry’s conception of immortality is something for which man must qualify while still in the flesh. Through the fellowship of a moral discipline Masons are taught to qualify for the fellowship of eternal life” (p. 171).
The Christian way of salvation is supernatural. But the Masonic way of salvation is naturalistic.
According to Christianity the new birth is a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit. According to many Masonic authorities a person is born again through initiation into the lodge. H. L. Haywood, for instance, declares: “The whole process (of initiation) should be made one of the most crucial experiences of the candidate’s life, one that will change him to the center of his being. It is like the moral and spiritual change which comes over a man who passes through the religious experience known as ‘conversion’ or ‘regeneration.’ Masonic initiation is intended to be quite as profound and revolutionizing an experience. As a result of it the candidate should become a new man” (The Great Teachings of Masonry, pp. 30, 31).
Salvation by grace is the very core of the Christian doctrine of salvation. But Masonry boldly teaches salvation by works and character. Says William E. Hammond: “Masonry inculcates faith in immortality as indispensable to moral living and urges its members to qualify for eternal life by the practice of those qualities—integrity, fellowship and service—which may reasonably be expected to constitute the felicity of a future life” (What Masonry Means, p. 175). At this point may be introduced two somewhat lengthy quotations from the pointed pamphlet, The Relation of the Liberal Churches and the Fraternal Orders, by E. A. Coil, a Unitarian minister and a Masonic Worshipful Master. Says this clear-headed writer: “That the fundamental difference in the principles embodied in the historic creeds of Christendom and those of our modern secret orders has not been clearly thought out is indicated by the fact that many pledge themselves to both. There are lodge men who, in the churches, subscribe to the doctrine that ‘We are accounted righteous before God only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, by faith and not for our own works or deservings,’ and enthusiastically join in the singing of hymns in which that idea is embodied. Then in their lodge meetings they just as enthusiastically assent to the following declaration: ‘Although our thoughts, words and actions may be hidden from the eyes of men, yet that All-Seeing-Eye whom the sun, moon and stars obey, and under whose watchful care even comets perform their stupendous revolutions, pervades the inmost recesses of the human heart, and will reward us according to our merits.’ A little child, once its attention is called to the matter, ought to be able to see that it is impossible to harmonize the creed statement here quoted, with the declaration taken from the monitor of one of our greatest and most effective secret orders, and found, in substance, in the liturgies of nearly all the others. If ‘We are accounted righteous before God, for the merit of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, by faith and not for our own works or deservings,’ then it cannot possibly be true that the All-Seeing Eye ‘Pervades the inmost recesses of the human heart, and will reward us according to our merits.’ One of those declarations excludes the other. Men cannot consistently subscribe to both” (pp. 10, 11). Coil goes on to say: “I have been devoting much time to an investigation of the subject, and I say, without fear of successful contradiction, that the liberal churches, from their beginning, have been developing in thought and sentiment, along the same lines as those followed by most of our great modern fraternities. They have championed and advocated the fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of Man, immortality, and salvation by character, and these are the very principles for which nearly all the great fraternities stand. Taught these principles in childhood, as they should be taught them in the Sunday schools and churches, people will not have to unlearn or deny them should they choose to identify themselves with almost any one of our present day fraternities, as those brought up in ‘Orthodox’ Sunday schools and churches have to unlearn, deny or ignore much that has been taught them if they become members of a lodge” (pp. 17, 18).
f. The Brotherhood of Masonry
Scripture tells us that God “made of one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth” (Acts 17:26). Therefore it is not amiss to assert that there is a physical brotherhood of all men. It may even be admitted that by virtue of such remnants in fallen man of the original image of God as reason and conscience, all men are brothers in more than a physical sense. But Scripture emphatically denies that the universal brotherhood of man is spiritual. On the contrary, it teaches that there is an absolute spiritual antithesis between believers and unbelievers. Spiritually they are opposites like righteousness and iniquity, light and darkness, Christ and Belial (2 Corinthians 6:14, 15).
Masonry boasts of the brotherhood of its members and glories in the universal brotherhood of man. Says J. F. Newton: “If one were asked to define Masonry in a single sentence, it would be to say: Masonry is the realization of God by the practice of brotherhood.” He goes on to describe universal brotherhood as physical and intellectual and spiritual. It is spiritual, according to him, because, while religions are many, “Religion is One.” He adds that the genius of the religion of Jesus was “the extension of the idea of the family to include all humanity” (The Religion of Masonry, pp. 116, 123ff.). And E. A. Coil says: “It is becoming more and more clear to me as the facts relating to the subject are brought out, that the fraternities and churches called ‘Liberal’ have been working along parallel lines; but, because the one puts the chief emphasis upon the fatherhood of God, and therefore emphasizes theology, while the other puts the chief emphasis upon the brotherhood of man, and therefore emphasizes sociology, they have not realized that they were occupying practically the same ground” (The Relation of the Liberal Churches and the Fraternal Orders, pp. 9, 10).
g. The Universalism of Masonry
There is a Christian universalism. God has His elect in every age and every nation. Ever since the fall of man the Son of God has been gathering the elect into His church by His Word and Spirit. In Christ Jesus there is neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, male nor female, for all are one in Him (Galatians 3:28). John saw the four living creatures and the four and twenty elders fall down before the Lamb and he heard them sing: “Thou wast slain, and didst purchase unto God with thy blood men of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation” (Revelation 5:9).
Masonry also lays claim to universalism, but its universalism differs radically from that of Christianity in that it denies Christian particularism and exclusivism.
Christianity claims to have the only true book, the Bible. Masonry places this book on a par with the sacred books of other religions.
Christianity lays claim to the only true God, the God of the Bible, and denounces all other Gods as idols. Masonry recognizes the Gods of all religions.
Christianity describes God as the Father of Jesus Christ and of those who through faith in Him have received the right to be called the sons of God. The God of Masonry is the universal father of all mankind.
Christianity holds that only the worship of the God who has revealed Himself in Holy Scripture is true worship. Masonry honors as true worship the worship of numerous other deities.
Christianity recognizes but one Saviour, Jesus Christ, the only Mediator between God and man. Masonry recognizes many saviours.
Christianity acknowledges but one way of salvation, that of grace through faith. Masonry rejects this way and substitutes for it salvation by works and character.
Christianity teaches the brotherhood of those who believe in Christ, the communion of saints, the church universal, the one body of Christ. Masonry teaches the brotherhood of Masons and the universal brotherhood of man.
Christianity glories in being the one truly universal religion. Masonry would rob Christianity of this glory and appropriate it to itself.
Christianity maintains that it is the only true religion. Masonry denies this claim and boasts of being Religion itself.
III. Conclusion
The committee finds that the evidence presented concerning the religion of Masonry permits but one conclusion. Although a number of the objections commonly brought against Masonry seem to the committee not to be weighty, yet it is driven to the conclusion that Masonry is a religious institution and as such is definitely anti-Christian.
Far be it from the committee to assert that there are no Christians among the members of the Masonic fraternity. Just as a great many who trust for eternal life solely in the merits of Christ continue as members of churches that have denied the faith, so undoubtedly many sincere Christians, uninformed, or even misinformed, concerning the true character of Freemasonry, hold membership in it without compunction of conscience. But that in no way alters the fact that membership in the Masonic fraternity is inconsistent with Christianity.

A Quaker will avoid liquor and gambling as well as refuse to swear an oath in court; but nowadays an affirmation is all that is required from those who have religious objections to oaths. The Quakers will not join secret societies, such as Freemasonry, which specialize in oaths.

Attitude Toward Christ, The Bible
Some Protestant defenders of the Lodge try to deny its religious character. Other Protestants and Catholics ask, “What element is missing in Freemasonry which we find in a religion?” Freemasonry has a creed and ritual, prayers to the Great Architect of the Universe, an altar and temples, feast days, chaplains, an initiation ceremony, and a system of morality. As its funeral service makes plain, the Lodge promises its members salvation and entry into the Grand Lodge Above, if they follow the precepts of the craft.
The Lodge honors Jesus Christ as it honors Socrates, Buddha and Mohammed. It cannot acknowledge any special spiritual claims by Jesus, since this would violate the basis of Freemasonry.
True, other fraternal and service organizations appoint chaplains and include prayers in their meetings, but the claims to a superior path to spiritual advancement and a superior morality are peculiar to Freemasonry. Every Lodge works with an open Bible on its altar, and to some Masons this seems to affirm its Christian orientation. The preferred term and the one used in English Freemasonry is the Volume of the Sacred Law. That no special authority is attached to the Old and New Testaments is clear since a lodge of Moslems may substitute the Koran, a predominantly Hindu lodge, the Vedas, etc. As the Digest of Masonic Law makes clear,
To say that a candidate professes a belief in the divine authority of the Bible is a serious innovation in the very body of Masonry. The Jews, the Chinese, the Turks, each reject either the Old or the New Testament, or both, and yet we see no good reason why they should not be made Masons. In fact. Blue Lodge Masonry has nothing whatever to do with the Bible. It is not founded on the Bible. If it were, it would not be Masonry, (p. 206).
Again we turn to Brother Pike:
The Bible is an indispensable part of the furniture of a Christian lodge, only because it is the sacred book of the Christian religion. The Hebrew Pentateuch in a Hebrew lodge and the Koran in a Mohammedan one belong on the altar; and one of these, and the square and the compass, properly understood are the Great Lights by which a Mason must walk and work. The obligation of the candidate is always to be taken on the sacred book or books of his religion, that he may deem it more solemn and binding; and therefore it was that you were asked of what religion you were. We have no other concern with your religious creed, (p. 11).

SOUTHERN BAPTIST
During the annual session of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), June 15-17, 1993, the messengers overwhelmingly approved a report on Freemasonry. This action recognized the many charitable endeavors of Freemasonry. It also acknowledged that “many outstanding Christians and Southern Baptists now are, and in the past have been Masons.”1 For the first time in the history of the SBC, however, the Convention concluded, “many tenets and teachings of Freemasonry are not compatible with Christianity or Southern Baptist doctrine.”2 The report accepted by the Convention identified eight tenets and teachings of Freemasonry that it concluded were not compatible with Christianity.3
First Incompatibility: The prevalent use of offensive concepts, titles, and terms such as “Worshipful Master” for the leader of a lodge; references to their buildings as “mosques,” “shrines,” or “temples”; and the use of words such as “Abaddon” and “Jab-Bul-On,”4 the so-called secret name of God. To many, these terms are not only offensive but sacrilegious.
Biblical Response: The so-called secret name of God illustrates the offensive nature of the above terms for Christians. Albert Pike, an influential Masonic writer, explained the first two syllables of the secret name in his discussion of the old French rituals of Freemasonry:
This is probably Jabulum, incorrectly copied; which, as I have shown, meant “the product of, that which proceeded, issued or emanated from Om.”
If correctly written, it is compounded of … Yu or Yah-u, … Baal or Bal or Bel, and Om, thus combining the names of the Hebrew, Phoenician and Hindu Deities, to indicate that they are in reality the same. In some old rituals it is Jabulum.5
Many leaders of Freemasonry confuse pagan deities with the true God of the Bible. However, the Christian Scriptures never represent pagan deities as simply different representations of the one true God. The Bible rejects all pagan deities as false gods and goddesses. Exodus 20:4-5 states: “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.” The Bible rejects the idea that idolaters worship the true God. Israel used the correct personal name for God, yet God rejected their worship because of their use of an idol.
Non-Christian religions recognize many different gods and goddesses, but none of these are a representation of the true God of the Bible. All pagan deities are false gods and must be rejected by Christians. The gods and goddesses of the non-Christian religions are different in nature and character from the biblical God. The differences are far greater and more significant than the terminology or name used to refer to God. No Christian should have any part in a ritual that honors or glorifies a pagan deity.
The 31st degree of the Scottish Rite Southern Jurisdiction is especially troubling for Christians because of the honor and glory it attributes to Egyptian deities. The following quotes are from the official Masonic commentary on the Scottish Rite degrees:
The second section takes place in a re-creation of the Court of the Dead in Egyptian mythology, a place where judgment is rendered on the worthiness of a recently deceased man to enter into the kingdom of the gods. This section of the ritual relies heavily on The Book of the Dead.
The candidate is brought into the Court of the Dead to be judged for actions while living and to determine if he deserves to dwell among the gods. H is escort is Horus, Isis, Horus’ mother, speaks first, inquiring whose ka has come to be judged.
Through Horus, the candidate claims to have led the most virtuous of lives. The gods express their hope that he speaks the truth. They ask him to approach the balance and stand near the body that was his in life.
Isis now directs the candidate to the altar of the great god Khem, the source of life. Here she inquires about the honesty of the deceased through six questions. Thoth again records the answers.
The answers to all of the specific questions before the altars of various deities are now thrown upon the balance, making the pans nearly equal.
Osiris, having once been a man and subject to the passions and weaknesses of human existence, knows that the other gods cannot appreciate human fallibility. He renders the final judgment—this man is worthy of admittance into the realm of everlasting light and rest and peace.7
The above reference to the Egyptian god Osiris attributes to him the same qualities and preeminence that the Bible assigns to Christ Jesus.8 Any participation by Christians in such rituals (even by proxy) is inexcusable. Joshua 23:7 states: “Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the name of their gods or swear by them.”
Second Incompatibility: The use of archaic, offensive rituals and so-called “bloody oaths” or “obligations,” among these being that promised by the Entered Apprentice:
“All this I most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear, …binding myself under no less penalty than that of having my throat cut from ear to ear, my tongue torn out by its roots, and buried in the sands of the sea, at lower water mark, where the tide ebbs and flows twice in twenty-five hours, should I, in the least, knowingly or wittingly violate or transgress this my Entered Apprentice obligation.”
Or that of the Fellow Craft degree:
“All this I most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear, … binding myself under no less penalty than that of having my left breast torn open, my heart plucked from thence, and given to the beast of the field and the birds of the air as prey; should I, in the least knowingly or wittingly; violate or transgress this my Fellow Craft obligation.”
Or that of the Master Mason:
“All this I most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear, …binding myself under no less penalty than that of having my body severed in two, my bowels torn from thence and burned to ashes, and these scattered before the four winds of heaven, that no more remembrance might be had among men or Masons of so vile a wretch as I should be, should I, in the least, knowingly or wittingly violate or transgress this my Master Mason obligation. So help me God and keep me steadfast.”
Or that of other advanced degrees with required rituals considered by many to be pagan and incompatible with Christian faith and practice.
Even though these oaths, obligations, and rituals may or may not be taken seriously by the initiate, it is inappropriate for a Christian to “sincerely promise and swear,” with a hand on the Holy Bible, any such promises or oaths, or to participate in any such pagan rituals.9
Biblical Response: The Bible teaches that Christians should avoid the kind of extravagant oaths found in the rituals of Freemasonry. Christians should simply let their “yes” be “yes,” and their “no” mean “no.” In Matthew 5:34-37, Jesus said:
But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No”; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Likewise, in his epistle, James wrote: “Above all, my brothers, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your “Yes” be yes, and your “No,” no, or you will be condemned” (Jas. 5:12).
The oaths required by Freemasonry are far worse than the examples the New Testament warns its readers against making. The Entered Apprentice swears under no fewer penalties than that of having his “throat cut from ear to ear,” and his “tongue torn out by its roots, and buried in the sands of the sea.” In the Fellow Craft degree, he swears under no lesser penalty than that of having his “left breast torn open,” his “heart plucked from thence” and “given to the beast of the field and the birds of the air as prey.” The candidate for the Master Mason degree swears under no fewer penalties than that of having his “bowels torn from thence and burned to ashes, and these scattered before the four winds of heaven.”
Some Masons claim that the candidates for the degrees do not take these oaths seriously and, therefore, the oaths are compatible with Christian teaching. However, the Bible warns that oaths should be taken seriously and not given rashly. Leviticus 5:4 says, “Or if a person thoughtlessly takes an oath to do anything, whether good or evil—in any matter one might carelessly swear about—even though he is unaware of it, in any case when he learns of it he will be guilty.”
Third Incompatibility: The recommended readings, in pursuance of advanced degrees, of religions and philosophies, which are undeniably pagan and/or occultic, such as much of the writings of Albert Pike, Albert Mackey, Manly Hall, Rex Hutchens, W.I. Wilmshurst, and other such authors; along with their works, such as Morals and Dogma, A Bridge to Light, An Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, and The Meaning of Masonry.
Biblical Response: Several of these Masonic writers deny the uniqueness of Jesus Christ. For example, Rex Hutchens wrote:
The purpose of teaching the concept of a Messiah in Freemasonry is to point out its near universality in the well-developed religions of the ancient world. We see references to Dionysius of the Greeks, Sosiosch of the Persians, Krishna of the Hindus, Osiris of the Egyptians, Jesus of the Christians. The purpose of these varying cultures’ messiahs was to find in human form a source of intercession with Deity; in particular one who, as a human, had been tempted and suffered the daily pangs of life and so could be expected to possess a particular sympathy and understanding; in a word, the messiahs expressed hope.10
In addition, some of Masonic writers confuse false pagan beliefs with Christianity. Albert Pike, in the following quote, confused the Christian Trinity with the Hindu Universal Soul: “Behold the True Masonic Trinity; the Universal Soul, the Thought in the Soul, the Word, or Thought expressed; the Three In One, of a Trinitarian Ecossais.”11
According to Hutchens, the following pagan deities are mentioned in the ritual of the 31st degree of Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction (31st degree). “The Egyptian deities present in the hall are: (1) Osiris: the Lord and Judge of the dead; (2) Atom: called the “Father of Souls”; (3) Ma: goddess of Truth and Justice whose image weighs upon one side of the balance; (4) Thoth: Scribe of the gods; (5) Anubis: Conductor of Souls; son of Osiris by his sister Nephthys; (6) Horus: son of Osiris, who presents the deceased to his father; (7) Isis: wife and sister of Osiris, mother of Horus; (8) Nephthys: sister of Isis and Osiris, mother of Anubis by Osiris; (9) Four sons of Horus: Kebhsenuf, Tua-mutef, Hapi and Amset.12
Pike even compared the Bible with the occultic Kabalah, which he apparently considered superior to the Bible.
All truly dogmatic religions have issued from the Kabalah and return to it: everything scientific and grand in the religious dreams of all the illuminati, Jacob Boehme, Swedenborg, Saint-Martin, and others, is borrowed from the Kabalah; all the Masonic associations owe to it their Secrets and their Symbols.
The Kabalah alone consecrates the alliance of the Universal Reason and the Divine Word; it establishes, by the counter-poises of two forces apparently opposite, the eternal balance of being; it alone reconciles Reason with Faith, Power with Liberty, Science with Mystery; it has the keys of the Present, the Past, and the Future.
The Bible, with all the allegories it contains, expresses, in an incomplete and veiled manner only, the religious science of the Hebrews.13
The SBC Report on Freemasonry correctly identifies these “recommended readings” as “undeniably pagan and/or occultic.”14
Fourth Incompatibility: The reference to the Bible placed on the altar of the lodge as the “furniture of the lodge,” comparing it to the square and compass rather than giving it to the supreme place in the lodge.
Biblical Response: Albert Pike identified the Bible as part of the furniture of the lodge in his book Morals and Dogma Of The Ancient And Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He wrote:
The Holy Bible, Square, and Compasses, are not only styled the Great Lights in Masonry, but they are also technically called the Furniture of the Lodge; and, as you have seen, it is held that there is no Lodge without them. This has sometimes been made a pretext for excluding Jews from our Lodges, because they cannot regard the New Testament as a holy book. The Bible is an indispensable part of the furniture of a Christian Lodge, only because it is the sacred book of the Christian religion. The Hebrew Pentateuch in a Hebrew Lodge, and the Koran in a Mohammedan one, belong on the Altar; and one of these, and the Square and Compass, properly understood, are the Great Lights by which a Mason must walk and work.15
Freemasonry has no commitment to the Bible as the unique Word of God. It happily substitutes non-Christian scriptures when Christians are not the majority of a lodge.
Fifth Incompatibility: The prevalent use of the term “light,” which some may understand as a reference to salvation rather than knowledge or truth.
Biblical Response: In commenting on the Christian interpretation of the Blue degrees in Freemasonry, Pike wrote:
Notwithstanding the death of the Redeemer, man can be saved only by faith, repentance, and reformation.
Having repented and reformed, and bound himself to the service of God by a firm promise and obligation, the light of Christian hope shines down into the darkness of the heart of the humble penitent, and blazes upon his pathway to Heaven. And this is symbolized by the candidate’s being brought to light, after he is obligated, by the Worshipful Master, who in that is a symbol of the Redeemer, and so brings him the light, with the help of the brethren, as He taught the Word with the aid of the Apostles.16
In the above quote, the concepts of light and salvation are closely related. This quote also reveals that many Masonic writers include reformation (good works) as one of the requirements for salvation. However, the Bible clearly states that good works are not a requirement for salvation.17
Sixth Incompatibility: The implication that salvation may be attained by one’s good works, implicit in the statement found in some Masonic writing that “Masonry is continually reminded of that purity of life and conduct which is necessary to obtain admittance into the Celestial Lodge above where the Supreme Architect of the Universe presides.” Even though many Masons understand that the “purity of life and conduct” can only be achieved through faith in Jesus Christ, others may be led to believe they can earn salvation by living a pure life with good conduct.
Biblical Response: According to Pike, the 25th degree “… teaches the necessity of reformation as well as repentance, as a means of obtaining mercy and forgiveness,…”18 In his commentary on the 27th degree, Hutchens wrote: “Constans refuses the monk’s arguments, trusting in a God of love who will recognize his honor and service to others as a noble path of salvation.19 Likewise, in concerning the 31st degree, Hutchens stated: “The candidate is brought into the Court of the Dead to be judged for actions while living and to determine if he deserves to dwell among the gods. His escort is Horus, Isis, Horus’ mother, speaks first, inquiring whose ka has come to be judged.”20
The teaching that meritorious deeds can make one acceptable to God is common in many false religions. The Bible, however, warns that there is no deed that can make a sinner acceptable to God. Only the grace of God that comes through faith in Jesus Christ can save those under the judgment of sin. The addition of works to faith as a requirement of salvation is contrary to the teaching of the Bible. The following Scriptures illustrate this: Romans 3:28: “For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.” Romans 4:4-5: “Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.” Romans 11:6: “And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.” Ephesians 2:8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Titus 3:5: “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”
Seventh Incompatibility: The heresy of universalism (the belief all people will eventually be saved) which permeates the writings of many Masonic authors, which is a doctrine inconsistent with New Testament teaching.
Biblical Response: Many Masonic writings can be interpreted as endorsing universalism. Pike wrote, “It is the fine dream of the greatest of the Poets, that Hell, become useless, is to be closed at length, by the aggrandizement of Heaven; that the problem of Evil is to receive its final solution, and Good alone, necessary and triumphant, is to reign in Eternity.21
Even more prominent in Freemasonry is the false teaching of inclusivism, the belief that followers of non-Christian religions will also be saved. Freemasonry holds out the promise of salvation to all worthy Masons regardless of the deity they worship. The Muslim or Hindu member of the lodge is on the same spiritual level as the believer in Jesus Christ. According to Hutchens, “Masonry is tolerant, even supportive, of the most diverse religious beliefs.”22
Pike likewise argued that no religion can claim to have exclusivity to the truth, nor can any religion claim to be superior to another.
Toleration, holding that every other man has the same right to his opinion and faith that we have to ours; liberality; holding that as no human being can with certainty say, in the clash and conflict of hostile faiths and creeds, what is truth, or that he is surely in possession of it, so every one should feel that it is quite possible that another equally honest and sincere with himself, and yet holding the contrary opinion, may himself be in possession of the truth, and that whatever one firmly and conscientiously believes, is truth, to him.”23
Inclusivism denies the teaching of the New Testament that only those who place their faith in Jesus Christ will be saved. The following passages teach this biblical truth: John 3:36: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.” John 14:6: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” Acts 4:12: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” First Corinthians 3:11: “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” First Timothy 2:5: “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” First John 5:12: “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
Eighth Incompatibility: The refusal of most lodges (although not all) to admit for membership African-Americans.
Biblical Response: The Bible teaches that all men and women are created in the image of God. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” According to Genesis 9-11, all the races of humanity scattered throughout the world are made in the image of God. For example, Genesis 9:6 states, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.” The context (Genesis 10-11) reveals that this prohibition applies to all of the races of humanity scattered throughout the world.
The New Testament reveals that Jesus rejected the racism of His day. John 4:9 indicates that Jesus discarded the racial prejudices of the Jews towards the Samaritans. “The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?’ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)” The apostle Peter, who struggled with the sin of racism throughout his life, stated in Acts 10:28, “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.” Racism should be rejected wherever it is found, whether it is discovered in the lodge or in the church.
Summary Statement on Freemasonry
There are eight major concerns that the Southern Baptist Convention has expressed about the teachings and practices of Freemasonry. These are:
Freemasonry uses offensive, non-biblical, and blasphemous terms relating to God.
Freemasonry insists on the use of “bloody oaths” or obligations, which are strictly forbidden by the Bible (cf. Matt. 5:34-37).
Freemasonry urges that occultic and/or pagan readings be used and that their teachings be appropriated in interpreting such concepts as the Trinity.
Freemasonry includes the Bible as part of the “furniture of the lodge,” but only as an equal with non-Christian symbols and writings.
Freemasonry misuses the term “light” to refer to moral “reformation” as a means to salvation.
Freemasonry teaches that salvation may be attained by “good works” and not through faith in Christ alone.
Freemasonry advocates in many of its writings the non-biblical teachings of universalism.
In some of its lodges, Freemasonry discriminates against non-whites.
While it is clear that some Christians, moral persons, and outstanding government leaders have been and are members of the Freemasonic movement, several points of the lodge’s teachings are non-biblical and non-Christian. While Freemasonry encourages and supports charitable activities, it contains both multireligious and inclusivistic teachings that are not Christian.
