Brief Introduction: Chinese Records?
Did you know that halfway around the world in ancient China, at the moments of Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection, the Emperor Guangwu was given supernatural signs?
The following was recorded and entered into the Royal Annals which exist today.
Chinese records say:
“Yin and Yang have mistakenly switched, and the sun and moon were eclipsed. The sins of all the people are now on one man. Pardon is proclaimed to all under heaven.” History of Latter Han Dynasty, Volume 1, Chronicles of Emperor Guang Wu, 7th year.
“In the day of Gui Hai, the last day of the month, there was a solar eclipse. [The emperor] avoided the Throne Room, suspended all military activities and did not handle official business for five days.” History of Latter Han Dynasty, Vol. 1, Chronicles of Emperor Guang Wu, 7th year
“Eclipse on the day of Gui Hai, Man from Heaven died”. History of Latter Han, Annals, No. 18, Gui Hai.
The Bible says :
“From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.” Mark 15:33 (KJV).
Three days after the eclipse this was recorded by Chinese astronomers: “During the reign of Emperor Guang Wu, on the day of Bing Yin of the fourth month of Jian Wu, a halo–a rainbow–encircled the sun.” History of Latter Han, Annals No. 18, Gui Hai.
Emperor Guangwu (January 15, 5 B.C.E. – March 29, 57 C.E.), born Liu Xiu, was an emperor of the Chinese Han Dynasty, restorer of the dynasty in 25 C.E. and founder of the Later Han or Eastern Han (the restored Han Dynasty). He ruled over the whole of China until his death in 57 AD.
Emperor Guang Wu reigned during the time of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection in Israel. The Emperor and astronomers recorded these historical events observed along with profound insight in Chinese historical records dated around A.D 31.

AI Results :
While Emperor Guangwu (reigned 25-57 CE) did rule during the time of Jesus’ crucifixion (around 30-33 CE), and Chinese historical records from his era mention unusual celestial events like eclipses and a “Man from Heaven died,” these records describe astronomical phenomena (darkness, halos) and general imperial reactions (pardon issued) and are interpreted by some Christians as corroborating Jesus’ death and resurrection, rather than explicitly documenting the biblical events or resurrection itself.
Key Points from Chinese Records & Interpretation:
Latter Han Dynasty (History of Latter Han Dynasty): Records mention an eclipse on the “day of Gui Hai” during Guangwu’s reign (around 32 CE), coinciding with the Gospel accounts of darkness at the crucifixion.
“Man from Heaven Died”: Another entry notes, “The Man from Heaven died,” which some link to Jesus.
Imperial Pardon: Following the eclipse, the emperor issued a pardon, which some interpret as acknowledging a significant event, possibly linked to the “sins of all people” mentioned in the text.
“Rainbow Halo”: Later, a halo (rainbow) around the sun was recorded, interpreted by some as a sign of resurrection or God’s witness.
Historical Context & Interpretation:
Correlation vs. Causation: These records describe events that coincide chronologically with the biblical narrative, but don’t explicitly name Jesus or describe his resurrection as understood in Christian theology.
Christian Interpretation: Many Christian authors and apologists point to these as independent, non-Biblical corroboration of supernatural events surrounding Jesus’ life, demonstrating God’s witness in diverse cultures.
Scholarly View: Historians acknowledge the existence of these records and the astronomical phenomena but remain cautious about directly linking them definitively to Jesus without more explicit textual evidence, viewing them primarily as historical accounts of celestial events and imperial responses.
In essence, Emperor Guangwu’s reign provides intriguing, contemporaneous accounts of unusual natural events that some believers interpret as echoes of the crucifixion and resurrection, even if they aren’t direct historical reports of them.
We have reviewed this Ai response and it appears in line with our understanding, which is limited to the study we have done over the years and we are not experts. We are learning still as well always. There is obviously controversy…so we ask other questions…see next topic….
